Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, June 2015

I suspect 2011 was too harsh for Garnacha, though the Cariñena behaved better. The 2011 Espectacle del Montsant shows signs of the heat on the organic and earthy nose with hints of malted cereals, graphite and peat and a...

This outstanding wine comes from a single, very steep vineyard planted solely with Grenache. The vines, all more than 100-years old are in clay and limestone soil. The vines have been carefully tended by Rene Barbier’s Clos Mogador team and the wine vinified by Rene himself.

Grapes are picked by hand and chilled for 24 hours at 4°C in the winery. Initial sorting is by hand. After de-stemming, a second, automatic selection takes place on a vibrating sorting table. The grapes undergo a 30-day fermentation in a single, large French oak vat and then mature 14 to 16 months further in the same vessel.

The wine is stunning, with glorious ripe Grenache fruit and wonderful soft spicy flavors, along with the enormous depth and richness provided by old vines.

The 2011 Espectacle Espectacle del Montsant is a Spanish Grenache hailing from the Montsant region. This 15.0% ABV red wine is produced by Espectacle and features a cork closure.

According to Luis Gutierrez from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, who scored the wine a 93, the 2011 vintage presented challenges due to the harsh conditions for Garnacha. Gutierrez noted, "The 2011 Espectacle del Montsant shows signs of the heat on the organic and earthy nose with hints of malted cereals, graphite and peat and a core of ripe cherries in liqueur, akin to a Châteauneuf du Pape." He expressed a preference for the palate over the nose, describing it as "lush with equally ripe flavors, plums, Morello cherries and very supple, tasty flavors." Gutierrez acknowledged that while the 2011 vintage does not reach the quality level of the 2010 or 2012 vintages, it remains a very good wine given the difficult growing conditions.

Wine Spectator's review, scored at a 90, praised the wine's rich and dark flavor profile. The tasting notes highlighted the presence of "blackberry jam, dark chocolate and black tea, with well-integrated tannins and accents of hoisin and fresh herb." The reviewer, identified as TM, remarked that while the wine is made in a modern style, it strikes a balance with its savory side. Wine Spectator recommends drinking this wine from now through 2021, and noted that only 300 cases were produced.

Overall, the 2011 Espectacle Espectacle del Montsant is a robust Grenache with a rich and dark flavor profile, featuring notes of ripe cherries, plums, and Morello cherries, complemented by darker undertones like blackberry jam and dark chocolate. Despite the challenging growing conditions of the vintage, this wine stands out for its lush palate and balanced savory notes, making it a noteworthy choice for enthusiasts of Spanish Grenache.
