Decanter, February 2021

One of the clear standouts where the fruit has real depth and is laced with black chocolate, liquorice, cassis as well as cassis bud. Cabernet dominant, will some angularity to the tannins but this is high quality, and...

janeanson.com, March 2022

Young, poised black fruits, blackberry and bilberry that are ripe but still laced with fresh acidities, giving a slight angularity to the tannins. This is good quaility, with signature Lynch Bages confidence, but does not...

Wine Enthusiast, February 2014

This is a luxurious wine that’s opulently rich. Ripe black fruits dominate, lending fullness to the firm structure in the backdrop. It’s a wine with great potential, density and weight. Touches of chocolate and licorice...

jamessuckling.com, February 2014

A dense, chewy wine for the vintage, with plum, currant and blackberry character. Full body, polished tannic texture and a bright finish. Very pretty indeed. This needs time to soften. Try in 2019.

72% cabernet sauvignon 23% merlot 3% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. 100 hectare estate on gravelly soils. Aged in 79% new French oak. Opaque at the core with a deep purple rim. Incredibly primary and closed in its...

Neal Martin's Wine Journal, May 2012

(NM90-92 points) The 2011 Lynch Bages is a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot raised in 75% new oak. It has an elegant, understated bouquet compared to its peers, with pure...

Vinous, July 2023

The 2011 Lynch-Bages has a well-defined nose with tightly-wound black fruit laced with mint and graphite. This certainly needs time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, fleshy tannins. It's open and...

Wine Spectator, March 2014

This has solid guts, with plum, currant and blackberry fruit melded together at the core, while notes of charcoal, warm tobacco and singed iron form the backdrop. Should be very solid when it comes together after some...

Château Lynch-Bages is a Pauillac Fifth Growth (1855 classification) with a long-standing reputation for sturdy, Cabernet-led wines that tend to age well. The 2011 is the grand vin from the Bages plateau, and the published blend is classic left bank: 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Several reviewers also note a high proportion of new oak, with Neal Martin reporting it was “raised in 75% new oak,” while Decanter and Jane Anson cite 65% new oak. Both Decanter and Anson add that an “optical sorter” was used “for the first time in this vintage,” a technical detail that speaks to tighter selection in the cellar.

In aroma and flavor, the wine consistently lands in Pauillac’s dark-fruited, graphite-and-cedar register. Neal Martin (Neal Martin’s Wine Journal) calls it “elegant, understated… with pure blackberry and cedar aromas,” and highlights a “quintessential Pauillac finish with graphite lingering.” Wine Spectator’s James Molesworth similarly finds a core of “plum, currant and blackberry,” backed by “charcoal, warm tobacco and singed iron.”

On the palate, 2011 Lynch-Bages is described as medium- to full-bodied with structure that benefits from time. James Suckling calls it “dense, chewy… full body, polished tannic texture and a bright finish,” adding, “This needs time to soften.” Wine Enthusiast, with an excellent 94-point review, leans into the wine’s richness: “luxurious… opulently rich,” with “touches of chocolate and licorice” alongside dark plum, toast and spice.

The most emphatic praise comes from Decanter, which awards an excellent 96 points, calling it “one of the clear standouts” and even “one of the best wines of Pauillac,” citing “real depth” of fruit with “black chocolate, liquorice, cassis.” At the same time, Decanter and Jane Anson both mention a “slight angularity to the tannins” and relatively “high” acidity, framing it as a particularly food-friendly vintage that rewards patience.
