jamessuckling.com, February 2014

(JS96-97 points) This shows incredible freshness and power, with dried pineapples, mangoes and papayas. Full body, medium-sweet with electrifying acidity. Vibrates your palate. Barrel sample still.

Vinous, April 2022

The 2011 Rieussec has a lifted patisserie, almond-scented bouquet, touches of wild peach coming through with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a very unctuous entry, powerful and intense, almost heady in style...

Wine Spectator, December 2014

Intense, with ginger, yellow apple chutney, dried pineapple and papaya flavors coursing through a finish that brims with singed almond and lemon chiffon flavors. This retains a touch of youthful rawness, featuring a...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, February 2017

The 2011 Rieussec, a blend of 95% Semillon, 2% Sauvignon Blanc and 3% Muscadelle is an absolute dream. There is wonderful precision and mineralité on the nose, the new oak more integrated than a few months ago. The palate...

Wine Enthusiast, May 2015

Layers of complex botrytis give this wine an immensely aromatic character. It is sumptuous and generous, ripe and full-bodied. The essential acidity comes through the dry structure of botrytis and sweet honey. The fruit...

Fat, powerful, intense and concentrated with sweet, lush, honey coated tropical fruits, apricot and peach, complicated by vanilla and spice notes is primary, yet already delicious. Give it time to develop and evolve and...

Decanter,

Tasted from cask. With a muted nose, this is distinctly oaky now. Good attack, sleek and creamy, it may not be nuanced now but it has precision and drive, and complex flavours of ripe citrus and apricots. Very long, one...

Chateau Rieussec is one of the largest properties in Sauternes and Barsac, covering 93 hectares of gravelly soil layered with alluvial deposits. The vineyard is planted mostly with Semillon (90%), followed by Sauvignon Blanc (7%) and Muscadelle (3%). It was classified as a First Growth in the 1855 Classification of Sauternes and Barsac.

The estate belonged to the Carmelite monks in Langon in the 18th century, but was confiscated during the revolution. In 1790, the property was sold as an “object of national heritage” to Mr. Marheilhac, owner at that time of Chateau La Louviere in Leognan.

The estate changed ownership several times until 1971 when it came into the hands of Albert Vuillier, passionate about Sauternes sweet wines but lacking the financial resources to make the necessary improvements. In 1984, Domaines Barons de Rothschild entered the scene and acquired Chateau Rieussec. Since then, the estate has made strides forward in quality and continues to produce outstanding wines.

Chateau Rieussec has been a leader among the great wines of Sauternes for several generations. Ranked as a Premier Grand Cru in 1855, it is made with a subtle blend of Semillon, Sauvignon and Muscadelle. Aged in oak barrels for 18 to 26 months depending on the year, with 50 to 55% in new barrels. The annual production varies a great deal depending on the vintage, but on average is about 6,000 cases, however, none was made in 1977, 1993 and 2012.
