Loads of energy are found in every sniff and sip. And this is only just starting to enter its journey. Based on previous vintages, this should age for decades. The deep, elegant and classic nose wafts from the glass in a mix of lime peel, fresh-cut grass, petrol, fresh figs, tart orange, vanillin oak and a complex base of chalky minerality. On the palate the wine is deep, fullish and crisp, with lovely focus and grip, superb mid-palate concentration, bright acids and a very long, classy and dancing finish. This is a beautiful DDC Blanc- complete and utterly refined- and clearly the finest white produced here since the stellar 2007. (Drink between 2016-2035)

There's serious depth to the shortbread, lemon curd, creamed yellow apple and melon notes, all inlaid with mouthwatering savory and thyme flavors. This is green-gold in colour, and the nose is pretty closed even at six years old, with touches of straw and stone fruits that are strikingly fresh, revealing a power that slowly but surely builds across the palate.

The 2012 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc has an intriguing marine influence nose that nods towards Muscadet - well defined with white flower and chalky scents following suit. The palate is fresh and vibrant, well balanced and quite rounded in the mouth, easing down with a chalky, more linear finish. I suspect this has gone into its shell, ergo my parsimonious score vis-a-vis out of barrel, but in my experience, Domaine de Chevalier rewards long-term bottle age and I expect that score to float upwards with time. Tasted January 2016. - Neal Martin

Domaine de Chevalier

Domaine de Chevalier of the Pessac-Leognan appellation is classified as a Grand Cru Classe de Graves. The property belonged to the Ricard family from 1865 until it was purchased by its current owners, the Bernard family, in 1983. It is one of a very few Bordeaux estates to have kept its “domaine” title instead of using the the more popular “chateau” designation.

The estate covers a hundred hectares, of which 45 are under vine: 40 for the property’s red wines, and 5 for its whites. The vineyards are planted with 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot for the red wines, and 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Semillon for the white wines. Soils are dark sand and fine white gravel.

Domaine de Chevalier has been run since acquisition by Olivier Bernard, who perpetuates that spirit of balance and the constant drive for perfection which have been the hallmark of their outstanding wines. The flagship red belongs to the elite of the great classified growths of Bordeaux, while the white is recognized as one of the world’s finest dry wines. The domaine also produces red and white second wines under the Esprit de Chevalier label, which are made from the estate’s young vines.
