Decanter, October 2019

Even in a more modest vintage such as 2002, Haut-Bailly excels thanks to the production team's detailed knowledge of this all-red vineyard. The vintage was a good one but perhaps less structured than 2014 or 2015. The...

In the same ballpark quality-wise as the 2006, 2008, and 2014, the 2012 Château Haut-Bailly has beautiful ripeness in its sweet red and black fruits as well as notes of smoky tobacco, tapenade, and damp earth. Medium to...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, November 2023

Medium-bodied, silky, energetic, bright style of Haut Bailly, with a lean to its lifted, red fruits, and a dash of cocoa in the finish. This is ready to go. Drink from 2023-2032.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, July 2017

The 2012 Haut Bailly is a brilliant wine for the vintage. It has a very intense bouquet with scents of blackberry, bilberry, cedar and a touch of pencil lead. This is very well defined and focused. The palate is...

Well-stuffed, with thick and muscular brambly structure that easily supports the core of macerated black currant, fig and boysenberry fruit flavors. A tarry edge coats the finish. More backwards than most of its peers at...

Chateau Haut-Bailly, an esteemed Cru Classé de Graves, lies in a 30 hectare (74 acres) vineyard near the center of the region. On the left bank of the river Garonne, it is positioned on a high sandy ridge mixed with gravel, atop a layer of sandstone and fossil shell remains. This terroir gives Haut Bailly wines distinctive character and refinement.

The property featured vines in 1461 or earlier, and from 1530s one could see a focused wine estate taking shape. That estate changed hands over the centuries and was handed down from generation to generation, each leaving their stamp. Today, Chateau Haut Bailly is owned by Robert G. Wilmers, an American businessman devoted to Bordeaux Grands Crus. His stewardship and investment has brought Haut Bailly to new heights but all in keeping with the estates strong heritage.

The long heritage of Chateau Haut Bailly is represented by 4 hectares of own-rooted, century-old vines. The remainder of the vineyard, on carefully selected rootstock, is Cabernet Sauvignon focused with 34% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot available to create complex, well-rounded wines.

Chateau Haut-Bailly, says Robert Parker Jr., “is a wine of undeniable finesse, elegance and restraint.” Marked by sophistication and supple tannins, historically—like most top-quality Bordeaux—it has been at its finest after some years of bottle age.

However, in recent years, the wines are increasingly attractive in their youth. This does not seem to affect the age-worthiness of the wine. It merely broadens the timespan for enjoyment. Indeed, steady improvements in winemaking and viticulture are raising overall quality to new levels.

Introducing the exquisite 2012 Haut Bailly from the renowned Bordeaux region in France. This Bordeaux Blend wine is a true gem that showcases the exceptional craftsmanship and terroir of the Pessac Leognan sub-region. With its deep, rich red color, this wine immediately captivates the eye and sets the stage for an unforgettable tasting experience.

On the nose, the 2012 Haut Bailly reveals an enticing bouquet of blackberries, raspberries, and strawberries. These intense fruit aromas are complemented by elegant notes of tobacco, cedar, and a hint of pencil lead, adding layers of complexity and intrigue to the wine.

Upon first sip, the palate is met with a full-bodied wine that boasts refined yet firm tannins and refreshing acidity. The purity of the fruit shines through, delivering a delightful combination of black currant, fig, and boysenberry flavors. The wine's structure is well-stuffed and muscular, providing a solid foundation for the concentrated fruit flavors. As the wine lingers, a tarry edge coats the finish, leaving a lasting impression.

The 2012 Haut Bailly is a wine that exhibits great potential for aging. While it may be more backward than its peers at this early stage, all the elements are in place for the wine to flourish. Wine Spectator recommends enjoying this wine from 2018 through 2027, allowing it to fully develop and reveal its true character.

Notably, this vintage of Haut Bailly has garnered high praise from esteemed wine critics. Wine Enthusiast lauds its very firm and closed-up nature, predicting that the wine will develop well over time, with acidity, sweet fruits, and concentrated tannins coming to the forefront. Meanwhile, James Suckling highlights the wine's intense fruit aromas, refined tannins, and fresh acidity, urging wine enthusiasts to indulge in a bottle in 2019.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate also raves about the wine's brilliance, with a well-defined bouquet and a medium-bodied palate that showcases firm tannins alongside wonderful balance and focus. Jeb Dunnuck echoes this sentiment, calling the 2012 Haut Bailly a sensational wine with terrific concentration, integrated acidity, and fine tannins that will benefit from a few more years of bottle age.

In summary, the 2012 Haut Bailly is a wine that combines elegance, power, and finesse. Its exceptional structure, intense fruit flavors, and long finish make it a standout choice for any wine lover. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for future indulgence, this wine promises to deliver an unforgettable experience.
