Goes on for minutes. It shows such amazing length and elegance. Depth. Phenomenal structure here, especially for the vintage. Reminds me of the 1998 or 1971, which were structured yet very fine.

Here we find pure blackberry and raspberry fruit...   (NM96-98 points) Deep garnet in colour, the Petrus 2012 out of barrel has a more broody, but no less compelling bouquet compared to the 2011 last year that was more open. Here we find pure blackberry and raspberry fruit, a background of citrus fruit lending the aromatics freshness and a touch of cold stone. The palate is medium-bodied with a crisp, structured, quite compact entry that bides its time in the glass. For sure this is a very tightly wound Petrus at this primordial stage, however there is good weight in the mouth and it arcs towards a saline finish that exudes breathtaking delineation and clarity. The 2012 feels like a more masculine Petrus stylistically similar to the 2008, but it will have more to offer after ten years in bottle.

The fruitiness is deceptive because this wine demands aging. Drink from 2024.

It seems refined...   96+ Tasted blind at the Southwold 2012 tasting, the 2012 Petrus demonstrated a forward, fruit-driven, ripe raspberry and wild strawberry bouquet underneath which lies graphite and forest floor aromas. It seems refined, understated, nonchalant even. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly savory opening, as if there was a tiny drop of Cabernet Franc. The tannins are fine but firm, the red fruit infused with cooked meat, black pepper and sage notes, although I was anticipating a finish armed with more body. That may well develop in time, yet it remains a regal Pomerol that will probably merit a higher score with bottle age, hence the plus-sign against the score. Tasted January 2016. - Neal Martin

One of the stars this year. Ripe, seductive nose with blackcurrant, blackberry and liquorish notes. Shows upfront charm but the palate has power, depth and distinction. Rounded tannins. Superb length.

Fermentation for Petrus is carried out gently, without any over extraction, in temperature controlled concrete tanks. The blend, typically pure Merlot, is defined in December and the wine is aged 18+ months in French oak barrels, 50% of which are new.

Petrus displays an intense color, a rich and complex nose and an opulent fruit. In great vintages, the wine can easily be kept 25 years or more.

Little known 50 years ago, Petrus has become mythical for the uniqueness of its wine. The wine’s inimitability is due to many factors. Among them is an exceptional terroir—located 40 meters above sea level, the highest point of the appellation—with a layer of heavy clay soil and an iron subsoil.

These are ideal conditions for the expression of the Merlot grape and the iron-rich clay is relatively unique within the region. As a result, the 28 acre vineyard is planted only to Merlot. Average vine age is more than 50 years, and are allowed to reach 70 years before replanting.

The approach in the vineyard and cellar is traditional and respectful of the special terroir. The viticulture is fastidious—severe pruning in the winter, regular ploughing, crop-thinning, de-leafing, manicuring the clusters in the summer—and allows perfect ripening of the fruit. Grapes are manually harvested over just two days and sorted before crush.

Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix purchased half a share of Petrus in the early 1960s and are largely credited with its rise to fame. The company also owns many other properties in both Pomerol and Saint-Emilion, including Magdelaine, Belair-Monange, La Fleur-Petrus, Lafleur-Gazin, Lagrange, Latour a Pomerol, Hosanna, and Trotanoy.
