jamessuckling.com, December 2016

I like the ripe-fruit and smoked-meat aromas to this. Subtle and complex. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a long and chewy finish. Needs time to soften. Very structured for the vintage. Better in 2020.

A rich, dense and muscular version, this reveals plum, black cherry, leather and tobacco notes, with a hint of chocolate on the finish. The assertive tannins need time, but already, with air, this is pulling together...

One of the oldest estates producing Brunello di Montalcino, Valdicava is located in the Montosoli area, famous in Montalcino for wines with great balance of body and aroma. Vincenzo Abbruzzese, owner and winemaker, has been making wine at Valdicava for more than 30 years. He and his family have long-crafted Sangiovese masterpieces, and their Brunellos are considered a benchmark - among the finest in the region. Vincenzo is known to be one of the masters of Brunello due to his passion and intense dedication to the vineyard, and clinical attention to detail at each step of the wine-making process.

Nearly 67 of the 333 acres of the property are dedicated to vines, all strictly Sangiovese. Martini Bramante, Vincenzo Abbruzzese’s grandfather, bought the property in 1953 and began bottling “Brunello Valdicava” in 1968. Today, with the help of Valdicava’s agronomist, Andrea Paoletti, and oenologist Attillio Paglio, Vincenzo has succeeded in bringing his wines to the next level and in establishing a stellar reputation.

Valdicava's philosophy is to work more in the vineyards to express balance and terroir. They like to produce a Brunello that represents the best tradition in structure and aromatics with more elegance, harmony, and fruit. Grapes from their Poggio, Pievecchina, Pratea and Sferracavallo vineyards provide for their primary wine, Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino.

The 2012 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino is a remarkable wine that exemplifies the best of Sangiovese Grosso from the Brunello di Montalcino region in Tuscany, Italy. With its stunning red color and a cork closure, this wine is a true representation of elegance and tradition.

On the nose, this wine offers a captivating bouquet of ripe fruit and smoked meat aromas. It is subtle yet complex, inviting you to explore its layers of flavors and aromas. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with firm and silky tannins that provide a beautiful structure. The finish is long and chewy, leaving a lasting impression.

According to renowned wine critic James Suckling, this wine needs some time to soften and reach its full potential. However, even at this stage, it displays remarkable structure and complexity. Suckling gave it a score of 96, highlighting its exceptional quality.

Wine Spectator also praised this wine, giving it a score of 93. They described it as a rich, dense, and muscular version of Brunello di Montalcino. Plum, black cherry, leather, and tobacco notes dominate the palate, with a hint of chocolate on the finish. The assertive tannins will benefit from further aging, with the wine expected to reach its peak between 2021 and 2035.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded this wine a score of 94, recognizing Valdicava's distinct style within the Brunello philosophy. The dark and inky appearance is complemented by bright ruby highlights, creating a visually stunning wine. The nose is generous and robust, showcasing dark cherry fruit, plum, Indian spice, mocha, and espresso bean. The bright acidity and delicate berry nuances of Sangiovese add depth and complexity to this well-crafted wine.

Wine Enthusiast awarded this wine a score of 92, noting its earthy aromas of truffle, leather, tilled soil, Mediterranean herb, and cured meat. The concentrated palate showcases steeped plum, fleshy wild cherry, licorice, tobacco, and a hint of game. Firm tannins and fresh acidity contribute to its age-worthiness, making it a wine to savor from 2020 to 2027.

Overall, the 2012 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino is a wine that embodies the essence of the region. With its exceptional structure, complex flavors, and remarkable aging potential, it is a true masterpiece that will only improve with time.
