So many Pomerols speak to power in 2012, but VCC is all finesse. Forward and open-knit with that classic sense of translucent beauty that is the most identifiable attribute of VCC, the 2012 is simply magnificent. Veins of minerality give the wine its precision and energy, while lifted notes of sage, lavender, mint and tobacco captivate all the senses. The blend is 87% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. Readers who can find the 2012 should not hesitate, as it is superb.

Packed with black fruits, it has velvet tannins that only slowly reveal their power. Layers of generous Merlot give the ripest black plum flavors. The wine is rich and the tannins well integrated, yet everything will age well. Drink from 2024.

The 2012 Vieux Château Certan has a potent, smoke, cooked meat, Cabernet Franc-scented bouquet that is beautifully defined—quintessentially Pomerol. You want typicité? Come right here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, quite gentle as it sashays across the mouth. The acidity is very well judged and leads to an elegant tobacco tinged finish. Alexandre and Guillaume Thienpont have produced one of the finest wines of the Right Bank in 2012, one that is up there with the greats. Tasted January 2016. - Neal Martin

Very distinctive, with a terrific smoldering tobacco and charcoal frame around a core of steeped fig, blackberry and plum fruit. The fruit drapes across the finish. Best from 2018 through 2030. — J.M.

So complex and pure with mushrooms, tobacco, chocolate and berries. Full-bodied yet refined, fresh and lively. The texture is so silky and intense. A real beauty and balance that both make you want to drink it.

The cépages is quite merlot-dominated this year, as Monsieur Thienpont noted that it was particularly fine in this vintage, and the blend is eighty-seven percent merlot, twelve percent cabernet franc and one percent cabernet sauvignon (from the great old vines that still remain here from that variety). Final analysis had not been completed, but the Thienponts expect the wine to come in between 13.4 and 13.5 percent in this vintage. As Alexandre Thienpont commented, “for us, 2012 is very similar to 1985 here at Vieux Château Certan and we expect the new vintage to age very similarly to the ’85.” Harvest began here on October 1st, so the teams waited for the late September rain to work through before starting to pick. The resulting wine is stunning, offering up a beautiful and utterly classic nose of cassis, dark berries, espresso, cigar smoke, gravel, tobacco leaf and a judicious base of nutty new oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and shows excellent mid-palate depth, with a supremely elegant profile, suave tannins, bright acids for the vintage and a very long, complex and classy finish. This is not as powerful as the 2005 here, but it is very close in absolute quality in its more elegant and classic style. Just a superb wine. (Drink between 2022-2050)

Silky tannins pull you along to a dry, polished finish. Cool and fresh with sweet blueberry fruit on the mid palate and a touch of earthiness adding savour. Very fine tannins. Earlier drinking wine than 2009 or 2010. 18/20 (JH)

Cool, medicinal aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, violet and mint. Then silky and deep on the palate, offering pure dark berry and floral flavors and an attractive combination of stuffing and energy. Finishes perfumed and very long, with suave, fine-grained tannins. Another very successful VCC in the making. - Ian D'Agata

Vieux Chateau Certan

Vieux Chateau Certan, sometimes referred to among Bordeaux enthusiasts as “VCC”, is one of the oldest and most prestigious estates of the Pomerol appellation. The estate is located in the heart of the Pomerol plateau, just a few rows of vines away from the bell tower of Pomerol’s famous church. The vines are planted on the famed Gunz terrace with soils made up of large, round pebbles together with different clays over an iron-rich subsoil.

The vineyard covers 14 hectares (35 acres) in a single block, and includes 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabernet Sauvignon performs exceptionally well in this terroir and reaches perfect ripeness levels.
