Unquestionably the finest vintage of this cuvee I’ve ever tasted, the 2013 Obsidian Vineyard Syrah is a modern-day legend of a Syrah from California. Tasting like it came from broken schist soils of Côte Rôtie with its incredible bacon fat, smoked meats, iron and beef blood aromatics, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a ripe, sexy, mouthfilling texture, sweet tannin and a finish that seriously just won’t quit. It has a fair kick of tannin on the palate, but there’s so much going on here that’s it’s almost impossible to resist today. Nevertheless, it’s going to be even better in 3-4 years and keep through 2033.

The Obsidian is the most savory of the Donelan Syrahs, but there is plenty of depth and overall intensity in the glass. Distinct gravel, cured meat, iron, smoke, tar and licorice notes hit the palate as the 2013 shows off its personality and pedigree. The Obsidian is virile and powerful, not to mention remarkably well-balanced for a wine of its size.
