A well celebrated year for Cabernet in Margaret River, and it shows here from one of the region's great producers. Tobacco box, blackcurrant juice, black tea leaf, graphite and feint nori lead the aromas before a swirl of the glass deepens to savoury cedar, ground coffee, tilled earth, bay leaf and sweet pops of white chocolate. This has evolved wonderfully over 12 years, balancing tertiary complexity with vibrancy and energy. The palate has a cool and svelte feel, though with an upfront tannin assertion to the sides. Blackcurrant and blackberry sit at the fore, followed by cedar, graphite, sweet earth, espresso and bay leaf which are all quickly wrapped up in ribbons of gravelly black-tea tannins with a burst of saline acidity drawing freshness and length. A remarkable expression with lovely complexity now, though with youthful energy and architectural structure for those wanting to wait.

Deep red/purple: an outstanding color in depth and hue. The bouquet is clean, fresh and alive, with bright black fruit and violet aromas, touches of cedar and toasty oak, the palate very deep and concentrated, with lush fruit and abundant tannins, which counter-balance the fruit and sweetness. A powerful yet elegant Cabernet with a very long and distinguished future ahead of it. An outstanding, profound wine.

(94+ points) The 2013 Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon hails from a warmer year that was responsible for some wines across the region that are typified by a buxom outlay of rich, ripe fruit. The last days of 2012 got hail and storms, and the marri blossoms were profuse. The season then cooled off during March and April, which the Cabernet benefited from. Houghton-selection clone make up the dry-grown block 8 and block 9 sites. In the mouth, the wine is firm and black, spicy and almost brooding (brooding were it heavy or dense, which it is not). You get cassis and bramble, black pepper and blackberry, cedar, bay leaf, peppercorns and tobacco, with star anise, a hint of pipe resin, and graphite and iodine to boot. It's really good. Dark, bright-rimmed ruby. Highly expressive, oak-spiced cherry, black currant and floral pastille aromas are complemented by suggestions of vanilla and pipe tobacco. Smooth, seamless and penetrating on the palate, offering intense, mineral-accented bitter cherry, cassis and spicecake flavors and a sweetening vanilla note. This wine is elegant and finessed, with aromas of bright red current, cedar, smoke, pencil lead, rose, bay leaf and baking spices. The medium-bodied palate offers tobacco and red berry flavors ensconced in ultrafine, leathery tannins. There's oak influence, but it is well integrated with the fruit. Drink now–2028.
