Decanter,

Dry, intense strawberries and red cherries meld together with an almost feral leathery scent. The fruit is taught and modern, and ends on a cool, refreshing, lingering finish.

This is 100% Melville fruit from their Sta. Rita Hills estate, and is a collection of 16 pinot noir clones. 40% of the fruit was fermented as whole-clusters with 60% gently de-stemmed in small (1.5 ton) open-top fermenters. Total skin and stem contact averages 30 days (7 day cold soak, 2 + weeks of fermentation and 1 + week extended maceration). From the press, the wine is transferred directly into neutral barrels (10+ year old French oak), where it remains sur lie without sulfur until June, when it is gently racked for the first time and prepared for bottling in August.

The 2013 Melville Pinot Noir Estate from Santa Rita Hills is a notable example of Californian Pinot Noir, drawing attention from several reviewers for its vibrant character and excellent value. Hailing from the Central Coast's Santa Barbara region, this wine is produced by Melville, a winery known for crafting expressive Pinot Noirs.

John Sweeney from JJ Buckley describes the wine as "pale crimson red" with a "classically styled Santa Rita" profile. He notes the presence of red fruits such as cherry, raspberry, and strawberry, complemented by fresh herbs and a touch of oak. Sweeney finds the wine "juicy, lively and energetic," recommending it as an "easy drinking quaffer" suitable for pairing with grilled chicken, salmon, and lighter meats. He suggests enjoying it over the next 3-5 years.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, through the voice of Jeb Dunnuck, awards the wine a commendable score of 92. Dunnuck praises it as "one of the best values in Pinot Noir," highlighting its "complex red fruits, rose petal and sous bois aromas." He describes it as "medium-bodied, ripe and expansive," with integrated acidity and a focused finish. The wine, mostly destemmed and aged for 11 months in neutral oak, is recommended for purchase by the case to enjoy over the next 4-5 years.

Wine Enthusiast gives the wine an impressive score of 93, noting its "light but plump red strawberry fruit" and a bouquet of sandalwood, dried sage, and thyme. The palate is described as rich with "spicy herbals" such as peppercorn, cardamom, thyme, and oregano, adding depth to the red-fruit core.
