I was also able to taste a bottle of the 2013 Insignia, which was based on 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, and the rest Malbec, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. Dense purple-hued with no lightening at the rim, it...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, October 2016

98+ The 2013 Insignia (their 40th vintage) is a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, and the rest Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. This wine is aged 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels, and the...

Wine Enthusiast, December 2016

0 The mighty Insignia shows a vibrancy of purpose and craft in this, its 40th vintage, combining 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, 3% Merlot, 3% Malbec and 1% Cabernet Franc. Together they find a higher calling of...

Extravagant aromas of crushed blackberries, mint, eucalyptus and flint. Full body, round and velvety textured. Rich and flavorful finish. Lusciousness with form. Reserved palate. Very attractive now but better in 2020.

Absolutely massive in color and concentration, this stains the glass and boasts the darkest purple color you could imagine without being black. The nose is incredibly aromatic with notes of vanilla bean, cassis...

Vinous, May 2024

The 2013 Insignia has arrived at its first plateau of maturity. There's a good bit of tannin left, while the aromatics show a bit more in the way of development. Inky red/purplish fruit, lavender and spice linger. The...

Decanter, June 2020

Insignia is typically blended around a backbone of Stags Leap District AVA fruit (40% in this vintage), with Southern Napa, Rutherford, Oak Knoll and St Helena making up the balance. It spends 24 months in 100% French...

Wine Spectator, July 2016

Rich and full-bodied, but exhibiting the lift of a brighter red. The dark berry flavors give this an elegant mouthfeel and ease the tannic strength. Tempting now but worth cellaring. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot...

First produced from the iconic 1974 vintage, Phelps Insignia is the first proprietary Bordeaux-style blend produced in California. Primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, each vintage is comprised of the best grapes from Joseph Phelps Vineyards, initially from both grower and estate fruit, and beginning with the 2004 vintage, from entirely estate-grown fruit sources. Grapes from six of the Joseph Phelps estate vineyards go into Insignia: Spring Valley Home Ranch Vineyard in St. Helena, Banca Dorada Vineyard on the Rutherford Bench, Las Rocas and Barboza Vineyards in the Stags Leap District, Yountville Vineyard in the Oak Knoll District and Suscol Vineyard in South Napa Valley.
