Wine Enthusiast, December 2022

Although ready to drink, this very fine Champagne has plenty of aging to go. With its rich Pinot Noir and ripe fruits, it is generous while also fully textured. Complex and balanced, mature fruit and toast working...

Complex and subtle aromas of dried ginger, pie crust, cooked apple and cooked peach follow through to a full body with ginseng, toasted bread and dried apple. Very fine and multidimensional. Great wine. Drink now.

The 20th edition of this cuvée is heavily Pinot Noir dominant with around 20% Chardonnay added, from grand cru villages only. There's an interesting dichotomy here, between the decadent orange cream richness of the style...

Champagne Pol Roger created their Prestige Cuvee in homage to Sir Winston Churchill, mindful of the qualities that he sought in his champagne : robustness, a full-bodied character and relative maturity. The exact blend is a closely guarded family secret but it is undeniable that the composition would meet with the approval of the man to whom it is dedicated.

Pinot Noir predominates, providing structure, breadth and robustness whilst Chardonnay contributes elegance, finesse and subtlety. Composed exclusively of grapes sourced from Grands Cru Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards, which were already under vine during Churchill's lifetime, Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill is only made in the very best vintages and is always released later than the other vintage-dated Champagnes from Pol Roger, marking Churchill's appreciation for older wines.

The 2013 Pol Roger Winston Churchill is a Champagne blend consisting predominantly of Pinot Noir, with around 20% Chardonnay. This white wine hails from the prestigious Champagne region of France and boasts an alcohol content of 12.5%. It is sealed with a cork and is designed for longevity, with many reviewers noting its potential for aging.

This vintage has received high praise from multiple reviewers, highlighting its excellent quality. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate awarded it a score of 96, describing it as "medium to full-bodied, pillowy and precise," with "aromas of crisp yellow orchard fruit, mandarin oil, freshly baked bread and pastry cream." William Kelley of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate noted its "racy spine of acidity" and "tensile but relatively charming profile," making it approachable yet sophisticated.

Vinous gave it an impressive score of 97, with Antonio Galloni remarking that the 2013 vintage is "fabulous" and "super-expressive right out of the gate." He mentioned that it features "bright saline notes" and a "core of lemon confit, dried flowers, apricot, tangerine peel, mint, and sage." Galloni emphasized the wine's power without excess weight, calling it a "terrific example" of such balance.

Wine Spectator also rated it highly, with a score of 95, describing it as an "expressive Champagne" with "ripe and juicy pineapple, cassis and apricot fruit flavors married to notes of brioche, saline, lemon curd, and honeysuckle." The review highlighted its "fine and creamy mousse" and noted that it’s well-suited for drinking now through 2035.

James Suckling echoed the high praise with another score of 97, commending its "complex and subtle aromas of dried ginger, pie crust, cooked apple, and cooked peach." He described it as "very fine and multidimensional" and recommended drinking it now.

Jeb Dunnuck’s Audrey Frick also gave it a 97, calling it "robust, classic, and noble in its expression." She noted its "complex and compelling" aromas and its structured yet refreshing palate, recommending it for consumption between 2024 and 2044.

Decanter rated it a solid 94, appreciating the "decadent orange cream richness" and "innate tension and coolness of the vintage." The publication highlighted its "complex and dynamic" nature, suggesting some patience in the cellar for optimal enjoyment.

Finally, Wine Enthusiast provided the highest score of 98, with Roger Voss praising its "rich Pinot Noir and ripe fruits," as well as its "complex and balanced" profile. He noted that it is ready to drink now but has plenty of aging potential.

In summary, the 2013 Pol Roger Winston Churchill is a highly acclaimed Champagne blend that offers complexity, balance, and a promising aging potential.
