A dry spring, followed by a warm summer and autumn with no heat spikes, resulted in a stunning wine, with the kind of savoury herb aromas and dark, deep, layered flavours that you find in a classic, elegant red from St-Julien.

On the earthy, truffle side of the style range, with a wave of fresh squeezed black cherries on the palate, the wine is medium bodied and finesse in style, combining grace and elegance with freshness, purity and good weight. While the wine shares the same textural elegance as Dominus, Ulysses does the same density or concentration. But once you’re done with the comparison, which is natural to do, this is a great style of wine that deserves to be tasted. The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is a potent, brooding wine. Scorched earth, leather, tobacco, incense, dried herbs and chocolate all show the hallmarks of a wine that is beginning to enter its early plateau of maturity. There’s plenty of structural and textural intensity, especially considering virtually the entire vineyard had been recently replanted at the time. Black cherry, tobacco, menthol, licorice and dried herbs linger on the poised, textured finish. -- Antonio Galloni

Hints of woodsmoke and licorice mark the nose of the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, which is beginning to show just a bit of evolution in its deep garnet color. Cigar box and cassis notes emerge with air, while the wine is full-bodied, plush and supple—almost creamy in texture—then adds hints of pencil shavings and graphite on the lingering finish. - Joe Czerwinski

This shows the intense extraction of the vintage without becoming overextracted, as the dark plum, boysenberry reduction and fig paste flavors are encased in an ample, yet polished and refined, structure. The long finish shows terrific cut, keeping the fruit in reserve while loam and smoldering charcoal accents strut. Everything is in place. Best from 2024 through 2038. 960 cases made. — JM
