Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April 2018

The cooler and more austere 2014 Espectacle del Montsant could have some similarities with 2008. It has beautiful floral aromas and hints of orange peel and wet stones. It has a serious, balanced and austere palate, a...

Decanter, December 2017

Pure old-vine Garnatxa from this astonishing site, fermented in oak vats and aged in large 4,000-litre oak tuns. There’s a step change here in terms of complexity and allusiveness compared to most of its Montsant peers:...

This outstanding wine comes from a single, very steep vineyard planted solely with Grenache. The vines, all more than 100-years old are in clay and limestone soil. The vines have been carefully tended by Rene Barbier’s Clos Mogador team and the wine vinified by Rene himself.

Grapes are picked by hand and chilled for 24 hours at 4°C in the winery. Initial sorting is by hand. After de-stemming, a second, automatic selection takes place on a vibrating sorting table. The grapes undergo a 30-day fermentation in a single, large French oak vat and then mature 14 to 16 months further in the same vessel.

The wine is stunning, with glorious ripe Grenache fruit and wonderful soft spicy flavors, along with the enormous depth and richness provided by old vines.

The 2014 Espectacle Espectacle del Montsant is a Grenache wine from the Montsant region of Spain. Produced by Espectacle, this red wine has an alcohol content of 15.0% and is sealed with a cork. The wine has garnered significant praise from professional reviewers for its unique characteristics.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded this vintage an impressive score of 97, highlighting its "cooler and more austere" nature compared to other years. The review notes the presence of "beautiful floral aromas" and "hints of orange peel and wet stones," emphasizing its serious and balanced palate. The 2014 vintage is described as having a more "contained ripeness" and an "earthier, more mineral finish." The reviewer, Luis Gutiérrez, appreciates the wine's austerity and suggests that it offers a distinct expression of the Espectacle vineyard.

Vinous also praised the 2014 Espectacle del Montsant, giving it a score of 95. Reviewer Josh Raynolds describes the wine as having an "opaque ruby" color and a "highly perfumed bouquet" that includes notes of red and blue fruit preserves, candied flowers, and Asian spices. The wine's smoky mineral overtone becomes more pronounced as it opens up. Raynolds notes the wine's "impressively concentrated yet lively" style, with flavors of raspberry, blueberry, violet pastille, and spicecake, complemented by subtle vanilla and smoke notes. The wine is said to convey a "suave blend of power and finesse," with an "extremely long" finish and "harmonious tannins."

Overall, the 2014 Espectacle Espectacle del Montsant is highly regarded for its distinctive character and the balance it achieves between power and subtlety. Both reviews commend its unique expression and clarity, making it a noteworthy vintage in the Montsant region.
