Decanter, October 2016

I genuinely thought Peter Gago said ‘I love you too’ but no, the words, or rather letters, were RWT – no longer the Red Winemaking Trial of the initials, but now a proven beauty of pure Shiraz polished by French oak...

Vinous, December 2021

Opaque, ruby color. Expansive, mineral- and smoke-tinged dark berry liqueur, licorice pastille and pipe tobacco aromas are complemented by suggestions of pungent flowers, vanilla and allspice. Concentrated yet lively on...

Wine Spectator, February 2017

Bright and juicy, with intense, ripe wild berry, licorice and black olive accents. The tannins are dense, velvety and mouthfilling, providing a terrific background for the focused and expressive flavors. Long finish...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, October 2016

(92+) Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2014 RWT Shiraz from the Barossa Valley offers cedar and cassis notes over a core of blackberry preserves, mocha and spice cake. Big, full, opulent and with notable notes of toasty...

Penfolds RWT Barossa Valley Shiraz presents an alternative to the multi-regional sourcing and American oak maturation that are hallmarks of Grange. RWT expresses single region Barossa Valley Shiraz matured only in French oak. The initials RWT stand for ‘Red Winemaking Trial’, which was the internal project name at its inception in 1995. Far from a ‘Trial’ now, RWT Shiraz was launched in May 2000 with the 1997 vintage. Its style is opulent and fleshy, contrasting with Grange, which is more muscular and assertive. RWT is made from fruit primarily selected for its aromatic qualities and lush texture. The result is a wine that helps to redefine Barossa Shiraz at the highest quality level.
