jamessuckling.com, February 2017

A wine evincing true enlightenment. It’s floral on the nose and also shows blackberries, stones, minerals and cedar. Full-bodied, yet its so fine-grained and tight. So, so long. It builds like a waterfall on the finish...

janeanson.com, February 2024

Smoky, grilled depths of black cherry, damson, raspberry, fleshy yet reserved, stands out among the Pomerols for its subtle complexity, still plenty of give in those tannins, still a ton to reveal, revelling in its...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, April 2015

(95-96 points) The color of red gems with the quintessence of black raspberry, tiny French lilies, cocoa bean, pink peppercorn and charcoal, this wine is all about the finesse and sublime purity found in the fruit. The...

Wine Enthusiast, April 2017

The wine is a velvet glove in an iron fist. The smooth surface of ripe fruits and rich blackberry flavors, masks the dense tannins that will allow this very great wine to age for many, many years. The acidity and the rich...

Decanter,

Former winemaker Jean-Claude Berrouet likens the growing season to 1978. But 60hl/ha then; 30hl/ha today. Classical and fine with the Merlot providing a Cabernet-like presentation of tannin. Very natural and unforced...

Wine Spectator, March 2017

This has lush, fleshy layers of blackberry, fig and black currant confiture rumbling through, pushed by notes of charcoal and warm tobacco leaf. Ganache hints fill in on the finish. Bass-driven, with a serious knot of...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April 2017

The 2014 Petrus was tasted on the same morning as the 2014 Vieux-Château-Certan and though they are built from different blends, their personalities are quite similar. This is a succinct, not powerful, much more refined...

Vinous, March 2024

The 2014 Petrus has a slightly more extroverted bouquet compared directly with Lafleur. Crushed strawberry mixes with cranberry, orange rind and light cedar scents. With aeration, there are hints of dark chocolate and...

The Wine Independent, March 2024

The 2014 Petrus is deep garnet-brick in color. Notes of dusty soil and rusty nails open out to a core of raisin cake, new leather, and cigar box with a lifted touch of kirsch. The medium to full-bodied palate is savory...

Little known 50 years ago, Petrus has become mythical for the uniqueness of its wine. The wine’s inimitability is due to many factors. Among them is an exceptional terroir—located 40 meters above sea level, the highest point of the appellation—with a layer of heavy clay soil and an iron subsoil.

These are ideal conditions for the expression of the Merlot grape and the iron-rich clay is relatively unique within the region. As a result, the 28 acre vineyard is planted only to Merlot. Average vine age is more than 50 years, and are allowed to reach 70 years before replanting.

The approach in the vineyard and cellar is traditional and respectful of the special terroir. The viticulture is fastidious—severe pruning in the winter, regular ploughing, crop-thinning, de-leafing, manicuring the clusters in the summer—and allows perfect ripening of the fruit. Grapes are manually harvested over just two days and sorted before crush.

Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix purchased half a share of Petrus in the early 1960s and are largely credited with its rise to fame. The company also owns many other properties in both Pomerol and Saint-Emilion, including Magdelaine, Belair-Monange, La Fleur-Petrus, Lafleur-Gazin, Lagrange, Latour a Pomerol, Hosanna, and Trotanoy.

Fermentation for Petrus is carried out gently, without any over extraction, in temperature controlled concrete tanks. The blend, typically pure Merlot, is defined in December and the wine is aged 18+ months in French oak barrels, 50% of which are new.

Petrus displays an intense color, a rich and complex nose and an opulent fruit. In great vintages, the wine can easily be kept 25 years or more.

The 2014 Petrus, a Bordeaux blend hailing from the esteemed Pomerol region of France, is a wine that commands respect and attention. It boasts a rich, deep red color that hints at the robust experience that awaits the drinker. As you open the bottle, secured with a classic cork, you're met with an intoxicating bouquet of aromas - floral undertones, blackberries, minerals, and a hint of cedar.

This wine delights with a powerful, yet refined palate. The first sip introduces a lush, fleshy layer of blackberry, fig and black currant confiture rumbling through, underpinned by notes of charcoal and warm tobacco leaf. The finish is resplendent with hints of ganache, leaving an impression that is both lasting and memorable.

At 14.5% alcohol, the 2014 Petrus is full-bodied, yet its fine grain and tight structure bring a balance that is truly exceptional. The tannins are powerful, yet superbly integrated and harmonious, revealing the exquisite craftsmanship of its producer, Petrus.

This wine has been acclaimed by critics, with Wine Spectator awarding it a score of 95, and Wine Enthusiast giving it an impressive 96. James Suckling was even more effusive in his praise, scoring it a near-perfect 98, while Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and Jancis Robinson's Purple Pages both rated it a solid 93.

The 2014 Petrus is a remarkable wine, exuding elegance, complexity, and depth. It is a testament to the timeless beauty of Bordeaux blends, and a shining example of why the Pomerol region is so revered. It is a wine to be savored and enjoyed slowly, preferably from 2020 through 2035. Its full potential will be unlocked with proper ageing and decanting, revealing a depth and complexity that is truly extraordinary. This is a wine for the true connoisseur, an experience not to be missed.
