Decanter, September 2018

Things have clearly switched up a notch with this wine, it’s become rich, deep and gorgeously mouth-filling. The nose is not as intense as the 2010 and the bilberry-blueberry character suggests fresh rather than overripe...

jamessuckling.com, February 2017

This is a fragrant and very attractive mid-weight wine with plenty of ripe fruit to balance the full, dry tannins, which give it some real power on the finish. Drink or hold.

janeanson.com, May 2022

This is rich and still young on the nose, with density through the mid palate and a silky texture to the tannins, capturing the gourmet but finely balanced elegance that is so sought after in the Margaux appellation...

Wine Enthusiast, February 2017

This is a concentrated wine, packed with tannins and black plum fruits. It has some of the fruity crispness of the vintage although with its dark structure and concentration it is obviously a wine that needs to soften...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, February 2017

Boysenberry, espresso, black cherry and licorice scents kick off the nose. Medium bodied, with a touch of too much oak at the moment, this needs time to develop, and integrate. While this is already better in bottle than...

Vinous, March 2024

The 2014 Prieuré-Lichine was one of the turn up for the books, surpassing all previous showings. It has a classy bouquet with vibrant red fruit, damp loam, cedar and freshly rolled tobacco aromas. This is almost...

Château Prieuré-Lichine is a Fourth Growth (1855) from Margaux, and the 2014 is its grand vin red blend. Decanter reports a Cabernet-led mix of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, with alcohol listed at 13%. Several reviews also highlight an élevage leaning confidently on new wood: Decanter notes “matured in 45% new oak,” while Jane Anson cites “50% new oak” and adds that 2014 was the first year “working with a new cellar… allowing better plot reactivity,” with Stéphane Derenoncourt as consultant.

In the glass, the wine is consistently framed as Margaux with a slightly firmer, more structured bend. Roger Voss at *Wine Enthusiast* calls it “a concentrated wine, packed with tannins and black plum fruits,” with “dark structure and concentration,” and recommends patience, saying it “will be ready to drink from 2024.” Neal Martin, tasting blind for *Vinous*, emphasizes aromatic detail—“vibrant red fruit, damp loam, cedar and freshly rolled tobacco”—and notes it is “almost Saint-Julien in style,” finishing with “a tingle of black pepper.”

The best reviews are notably strong for the château in this vintage. *Decanter* (94) says “things have clearly switched up a notch,” describing a wine that is “rich, deep and gorgeously mouth-filling,” with fruit that feels “fresh rather than overripe,” carried by “a silky, soft caress of tannins,” and gives a wide drinking window of 2024–2040. Anson (93) likewise praises “great balance,” citing “density through the mid palate” and “a silky texture,” with “cocoa bean, black cherry, crushed mint on the finish.”

James Suckling (93) lands in a similar place, calling it “fragrant and very attractive,” with “plenty of ripe fruit to balance the full, dry tannins,” and advises “drink or hold.” Jeff Leve (92) notes the oak is currently assertive—“a touch of too much oak at the moment”—but expects it to integrate with time. Overall, 2014 Prieuré-Lichine reads as a poised, mid-weight Margaux with real structure and a clear upward trajectory in bottle.
