Very nice citrusy fruit on the palate and enough acidity to balance the medium-full body. There's a hint of marzipan on the nose that takes a little bit away from it. Made from organically grown grapes.

Chapoutier is one of the oldest wine producers in the Rhone Valley with a history that dates back to 1808. For the last two hundred years, the estate has been producing some of the greatest wines in the Rhone Valley. Quality improved and Chapoutier gained international recognition under Michel Chapoutier’s leadership. The massive negociant and winery produces single-vineyard expressions and classic wines from a range of appellations in the north and south of the valley. Today, their range also includes wines from some Roussillon appellations as well as projects in Portugal and Australia.

Michel Chapoutier, a great lover of Alsace wines, dreamt of acquiring his own domaine and creating premium and ultra premium wines. He discussed it with four wine-loving friends and in 2006, they agreed to make a fine Riesling in Alsace together.

In 2009, the “Club of 5” finally set up on 5 hectares in Le Felsberg in Bernardville, near Reichsfeld. The vineyards, planted on steep slopes, were worked diligently and meticulously. This terroir is unique in Alsace: the only terroir in Alsace composed of blue schist, located in the highest vineyards in the region (1,250 feet) and facing directly south. It is believed that vines were planted there in the 12th century by Cistercian monks, master winemakers who knew all about the importance of terroir.

The soil, made up of blue schist and variable amounts of quartz inclusions depending on the parcel, particularly suits Riesling and the first bottles of Schieferkopf were released in 2011. Today, six Alsace AOC wines, including three single vineyard selections, deliver their finest expressions.

This exquisite 2014 Schieferkopf (Chapoutier) Riesling Lieu-Dit Berg from Alsace, France is a true gem that showcases the exceptional craftsmanship of the renowned producer, Schieferkopf. With its elegant white color and a cork closure, this wine is a testament to the traditional winemaking practices that have been passed down through generations.

In the glass, this Riesling reveals a captivating pale yellow hue that shimmers with brilliance, inviting you to explore its aromatic symphony. The nose exudes an enchanting bouquet, with delicate notes of citrus dancing alongside a subtle hint of marzipan. While the marzipan note is present, it does not overpower the wine, allowing the citrusy fruit to take center stage.

On the palate, this Riesling truly shines. The medium-full body is balanced perfectly by a refreshing acidity, creating a harmonious and well-structured wine. The citrus flavors burst forth, tantalizing the taste buds with their vibrant and zesty character. Each sip unveils a new layer of complexity, as the wine gracefully unfolds on the palate, leaving a lasting impression.

Crafted from organically grown grapes, this wine not only delights the senses but also embodies a commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. The attention to detail and respect for nature are evident in every sip.

With a score of 90 from esteemed wine critic James Suckling, this 2014 Schieferkopf (Chapoutier) Riesling Lieu-Dit Berg has rightfully earned its place among the finest wines of Alsace. Whether enjoyed on its own or paired with a delectable seafood dish, this wine promises to transport you to the picturesque vineyards of France, where passion and tradition converge in every bottle.
