The story of Cask 23 began during the harvest of 1974. Back then, the winery enlisted the help of celebrated winemaker Andre Tchelistcheff. As he tasted through various lots of new wines from that year, one lot from S.L.V. was so beautiful and deliciously distinct the winery decided it should be bottled separately. It was named Cask 23 for the large wooden cask in which it was aged.

Today, the wine is a blend of the most distinctive fruit from the S.L.V and Fay vineyards, resulting in a wine of extraordinary depth and richness balanced by restraint. Over the years, Cask 23 has become one of the most highly regarded and collected wines worldwide.

The 2014 Stag's Leap Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Cask 23 is a distinguished wine from Napa Valley, California, that has garnered praise from several esteemed critics. Crafted by Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, this Cabernet Sauvignon is noted for its exquisite balance and complexity.

James Suckling awarded the wine a score of 94, highlighting its "glorious aromas of blackberries and blackcurrants," which transition smoothly into a "full body" with "ultra-fine tannins and an alluring finish." He commends the wine for its "polish and verve," suggesting that it already exhibits its pedigree but will be even more rewarding if tasted in 2020.

Wine Spectator also offers a commendable review with a score of 93, describing the wine as "deftly balanced, creamy, and smooth-textured." The review underscores the "elegant array of red and dark berry, anise, cedar, and mocha flavors," which culminate in "fine-grained tannins" and a "splash of mocha." The publication advises enjoying this wine from now through 2032.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate is particularly impressed, assigning the wine a score between 94 and 96 points. Parker notes the wine's "great fruit, terrific texture, full body, and sensational purity," with "plenty of blue and black fruits interwoven." He praises the wine's ability to showcase "purity, harmony, complexity, and individuality," suggesting it can be enjoyed over the next 25 years.

Jeb Dunnuck provides an excellent review, rating the wine at 97 points. He describes it as a "smoking effort," noting its "deep purple color" and "stunning notes of blackcurrants and black raspberries." Dunnuck highlights the wine's "full-bodied richness" and "majestic texture," applauding its "rare mix of power and elegance."

Overall, the 2014 Stag's Leap Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Cask 23 is a remarkable wine that offers a combination of power, elegance, and longevity.
