jebdunnuck.com, November 2017

The 2014 Troplong Mondot is unquestionably one of the wines of the vintage, and this beauty has more intensity, richness, and exuberance than just about every other wine in 2014. A blend of 90% Merlot, 8% Cabernet...

jamessuckling.com, February 2017

The dark, savory, earthy and plum aromas plus the serious tannins here give this wine a lot of character, but it really needs a couple of years to open up. The finish packs a big tannic punch. For the long term. Try in 2024.

TheWineCellarInsider.com, July 2017

Deep in color, the wine is round, concentrated and loaded with dark chocolate covered cherries and plums, smoke, licorice and truffle. With depth of flavor, intensity and richness, this is a full bodied effort that will...

The Wine Independent, March 2024

The 2014 Troplong Mondot is medium to deep garnet-brick in color. Scents of cedar and unsmoked cigars are followed by nuances of dried blackberries and plum pudding with a waft of spice cake. The medium-bodied palate is...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April 2017

The 2014 Troplong-Mondot performed to my expectation now that the wine is in bottle. It has a refined bouquet with black cherries, raspberry preserve and mineral scents that gain intensity in the glass, but never get...

Wine Enthusiast, April 2015

(92-94 points) 92–94. Barrel Sample. This wine is rich and concentrated, with great weight and personality—every element seems larger than life. The ripe plum flavors are forward and juicy. The finish has a subtle warmth...

Wine Spectator, March 2017

Solidly built, with some heft to the core of raspberry, blackberry and boysenberry confiture flavors. Delivers ample cut and drive thanks to the racy graphite beam. Hints of ganache and Turkish coffee add a bass line...

Decanter, May 2018

Voluptuous aromas of dense black fruits. Concentrated and chocolatey palate; a touch extracted but shows freshness on the finish. Tannic, but has no rough edges.

Vinous, March 2024

The 2014 Troplong Mondot has a lifted bouquet with black cherries, raspberry and subtle cedar notes, which seem to be less evolved than many of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, impressive...

The 2014 Château Troplong Mondot is a Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé B from Bordeaux, made in the estate’s distinctly rich, powerful pre-2017 style. The vineyard sits at one of the highest points in Saint-Émilion—over 100 meters—on deep limestone under thick clay soils, a setting that helps explain both the wine’s structure and its density. The blend is Merlot-led (73% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon), and the alcohol is listed at 14.5%.

Critics were notably enthusiastic. Antonio Galloni (Vinous) gave it an excellent 96 points, calling it “super-impressive,” and highlighting “dark cherry, plum, smoke, chocolate and dark spice.” Jeb Dunnuck also awarded an excellent 96 points and went further, describing it as “unquestionably one of the wines of the vintage.” Those are top-tier endorsements for 2014 Bordeaux and place Troplong Mondot among the vintage’s reference-point Right Bank wines.

Wine Spectator rated it 92 points, reinforcing the consensus that the wine delivers both quality and presence, even if it may not be the most restrained expression of the appellation. From barrel, Wine Enthusiast scored it 92–94 and described it as “rich and concentrated” with “great weight and personality,” language that aligns closely with Troplong Mondot’s reputation in this era.

Context matters with 2014: Galloni characterized it as a “complicated vintage saved by an exceptional Indian summer in September,” and Troplong Mondot appears to have used that late-season lift to build ripeness and depth. After the estate’s 2017 sale to SCOR, the winemaking moved toward earlier picking and less new oak; the 2014 stands as a clear example of the earlier, more opulent house approach, built for collectors who appreciate intensity as much as pedigree.
