Herbal flavors and stewed fruit aromas dominate the super clear and stony bouquet of the 2014 Pündericher Marienburg Riesling Rothenpfad Reserve. Aged for two years on its lees and bottled in October 2016 just two weeks before I tasted it, this is a full-bodied, rich and silky textured Riesling with very concentrated, viscous fruit, great purity and elegance. Pale straw color fading to a silver rim. Aromas of jasmine, honey, lemon, black tea, and an overarching stony minerality reflecting the red slate soils in which the Rothenpfad vines are planted. On the palate are flavors of summer peaches and apricot with a hint of pumpkin seeds on the finish. A beautiful trocken (dry) Riesling that melds tingling acidity with a rich mouthfeel and a lingering finish. Busch has biodynamically farmed its vineyards for a decade and long favored skin contact, spontaneous fermentation, and long élevage in cask with lees-stirring, resulting in complex wines.

Powerfully spiced and rich-tasting, with plenty of white chocolate and espresso notes to the ripe peach, pear tart and dried apricot flavors. The complex finish is plush and creamy. Biodynamic. Drink now through 2023. 40 cases imported.–KM
