Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, February 2022

(98+ points) The Biondi-Santi 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is initially a reticent wine and one that does not immediately subscribe to the overstated abundance and exuberance of the vintage. Give it time. I wrote...

Wine Enthusiast, September 2022

The prestige of Brunello del Greppo dates back to the 19th Century with the story of Clemente Santi who began making wine using 100% Sangiovese. He passed on his wine knowledge to his nephew Ferruccio Biondi Santi, who, after the phyloxera in the second half of the 1800s, isolated a clone of Sangiovese that gave birth to wines of extraordinary longevity. In 1888, Ferruccio produced the first bottle of Brunello di Montalcino from this clone.

The entire estate includes 47 hectares of land, but only 25 hectares are dedicated to plantings of Sangiovese Grosso. The oldest vines, totaling 5 hectares, date from 1930-1970. Only the best grapes are destined to the production of Biondi Santi Brunello - those from vineyards at least ten years old are for the Annata, and those at least twenty-five years old for the Riserva. Marled soils with heavy stones have been always preferred by the family with southern, southeastern, eastern, northeastern and northern exposure. The yield per hectare is kept low at 3-5 tons per hectare. Current production rarely exceeds 80,000 bottles, including about 10,000 bottles of Riserva made only during exceptional harvests.

Franco Biondi Santi, oenologist, learned the subtle art of vinification from his father, and has continued to run the Greppo Estate, with its unequalled collection of Reserve bottles. He has increased the production of Brunello del Greppo from the 4 hectares cultivated until his father’s death, to the current 25.

The future continuity of Greppo is represented by Franco’s two children: Jacopo, with his vivid imagination in relation to wines (firmly convinced of the typical character of Brunello del Greppo), and Alessandra (involved in promoting the estate).

The 2015 Biondi Santi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a noteworthy expression of Sangiovese Grosso from the esteemed Tuscany region in Italy. This wine emerges from the Brunello di Montalcino sub-region and is presented in a 750 ml bottle with a cork closure. The alcohol content is 14.5%.

This vintage, described as a generous and weighty expression, is defined by its firm, steely tannins and mouth-coating texture. Decanter notes that the wine is "less bracing than usual" with flavors of "sweet tobacco and bay leaf" punctuating ripe red cherry and finishing with a "pleasant bitter twist" (Decanter, 11/20/2021). Decanter awarded it a score of 94.

Eric Guido from Vinous offers a more enthusiastic review, giving it a score of 97. He describes the wine as having a "deep and seductive display of black raspberry preserves complemented by sweet sage, dried roses, and pipe tobacco." He adds that it greets the palate with "undeniable elegance," featuring "velvety waves of violet-tinged wild berries and sweet spices" with high energy and purity (Vinous, 12/1/2021).

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate provides an exceptional review with a score of 98+. The reviewer highlights its reticent nature, noting that the wine "does not immediately subscribe to the overstated abundance and exuberance of the vintage." Over several tastings, the wine revealed a "nuanced personality" with flavors of "wild berry, underbrush, ferrous earth, and candied orange peel." The wine is described as having a "silky, mid-weight palate" with "beautifully managed and silky tannins" (Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, 2/18/2022).

James Suckling also awards the wine a score of 97, appreciating its "complex yet pure, subtle and refined nose" and describing it as "powerful, medium-to full-bodied" but "seamless and bright." He suggests that the wine's "understated complexity" will need time to fully bloom (jamessuckling.com, 4/28/2022).

Wine Enthusiast's review aligns with others, giving the wine a 97. Kerin O’Keefe notes the aromas of "new leather, pressed rose, and mature berry" along with "whiffs of underbrush and pipe tobacco." The palate is described as "structured, elegant" with "firm but ultrarefined tannins" that promise decades of evolution (Wine Enthusiast, 9/1/2022).

Lastly, Wine Spectator awards it a 96, describing the wine as "round and fruity" with an accent of "white pepper against cherry, raspberry, and floral flavors." The wine is "elegant and verging on racy" with a "firm, well-integrated structure" and a "minerally finish" (Wine Spectator, 4/5/2023).

Overall, the 2015 Biondi Santi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a highly acclaimed wine that promises longevity and complexity, with top reviews from several distinguished publications.
