Wine Enthusiast, April 2018

Powerful tannins initially show in this perfumed wine. Behind them lie velvety-smooth black-currant fruit. The wine is pure, open and will age well over a medium term. It will be ready to drink from 2025.

Alter Ego is a different, nuanced expression of the Chateau Palmer terroir. Born with the 1998 vintage, Alter Ego resulted from a new approach to selecting and blending, intended to interpret the Chateau Palmer terroir differently without departing from the values that make the reputation of the estate’s wines – namely, finesse and elegance, aromatic richness, harmony and length.

Made in roughly the same volume as Chateau Palmer, Alter Ego spends less time in oak, just 16 to 18 months, and only 25% to 40% of the wood is new.

Offering intense, crispy and juicy fruits, Alter Ego is a spontaneous uninhibited wine, soft and round as soon as it has finished barrel aging. Its lush aromas and supple tannins make it a wine that can be appreciated in the first years after bottling.

The 2015 Palmer Alter Ego, a Bordeaux blend from the Margaux region, has garnered substantial acclaim from various esteemed wine critics. This red wine, produced by Chateau Palmer, is noted for its complex flavor profile and elegant structure. With an alcohol content of 14.5% and sealed with a traditional cork closure, this wine has become a notable vintage.

Jeff Leve of TheWineCellarInsider.com rated the 2015 Alter Ego with a score of 94, describing it as rich and sensuous. He highlighted its "rocks, stones, flowers, wet earth and inky, dark cherry, plum and even darker chocolate notes," emphasizing the wine's texture and complexity. Leve was particularly impressed, stating that this vintage surpasses those from the '70s, '80s, and '90s, calling it "the best vintage of Alter Ego ever produced."

Jeb Dunnuck from jebdunnuck.com also praised the wine with a score of 93, noting its "black cherries, cassis, scorched earth and hints of toasty oak." He described the wine as full-bodied and beautifully balanced, with ripe tannin and solid mid-palate depth. Dunnuck believes the wine shows the charm of its vintage, suggesting it will keep well for 10-15 years.

James Suckling from jamessuckling.com gave the highest score of 96, lauding its "purity and beauty" with aromas of "blackberries, dark chocolate, walnuts, cedar and lavender." Suckling emphasized its tight and focused nature, thanks to "sensational tannin tension that is intense yet polished." He recommended letting it age for five to six years for optimal enjoyment.

Wine Enthusiast awarded the wine a score of 94, highlighting its "powerful tannins" and "velvety-smooth black-currant fruit." They described it as pure and open, predicting it will age well and be ready to drink from 2025.

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, through Lisa Perrotti-Brown, gave the wine a score of 91. She noted its medium to deep garnet-purple color and a nose of "ripe plums, cassis and crushed cherries," with additional touches of "incense, lavender, and chocolate box." Perrotti-Brown praised its elegance and finesse.

Decanter rated it 93, pointing out that this vintage includes Petit Verdot, which adds "a swirl of cinnamon and black pepper spice." They suggested waiting a few more years before drinking to allow it to develop fully.

Lastly, Wine Spectator scored the wine 92, describing it as "warm and inviting," with ripe plum and cassis notes, complemented by "lilac, fresh earth and singed sandalwood details."

Overall, the 2015 Palmer Alter Ego is a well-balanced and highly praised Bordeaux blend, with reviewers noting its complexity, elegance, and aging potential.
