Jean Philippe Janoueix's star estate in St-Émilion has been subject to serious renovation in recent years, precisely so it can take full advantage of vintages like 2015. A surprisingly restrained take on the vintage, this has all the elements held in check and should open up beautifully over the next five to eight years. Well fleshed-out black fruits are held by finely grained tannins.

A blend of 71% Merlot and 29% Cabernet Franc matured in 100% new French oak barrels, the 2015 La Confession has intense notes of crushed plums, warm black currants and black cherries with touches of charcuterie, Marmite toast and garrigue. Medium to full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins and a lively backbone of muscular fruit, it finishes with an herbal lift. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown

From a tiny estate located just east of Libourne and clay, sandy soils, made with consulting advice from Jean-Philippe Fort, the 2015 Château La Confession is an outstanding blend of roughly 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc that saw malo and aging in new barrels. It boasts a deep ruby/purple color in addition to terrific notes of blackberries, blueberries, violets, damp earth and spring flowers. With medium to full-bodied richness, an elegant, fresh mouthfeel, and integrated acidity, it’s worth seeking out and will drink well for 10-15 years.
