This “three-star” Auslese was obviously rendered under the influence of noble rot, but it is the first Erdener Treppchen bottling of the present collection to exhibit what I take to be site-typical orange and tangerine, here in aromatically zesty and liqueur-like concentration. Similarly site-typical are scents of sassafras, mint and sarsaparilla, which acquire almost syrupy richness on the palate. A prickle of orange and kumquat rinds, sage-like sizzle and incisive cress help turn the implacably long finish into a tongue-tingling extravaganza of vibratory energy and intensity. This should prove amazing stuff to follow. - David Schildknecht
