Tignanello is produced exclusively from the vineyard of the same name, a parcel of some 140 acres (57 hectares) with limestone-rich soils and a southwestern exposure at 1150-1325 feet (350-400 meters) above sea level at the Tignanello estate.

It was the first Sangiovese wine to be aged in small oak barrels, the first modern red wine in the region to use such non-traditional varieties as Cabernet in the blend, and among the first red wines from the Chianti Classico area to be produced without white grapes.

The wine, originally called "Chianti Classico Riserva vigneto Tignanello" (a Chianti Classico Riserva from the Tignanello vineyard), was produced for the first time from a single vineyard parcel in 1970, when the blend contained 20% of Canaiolo and 5% of Trebbiano and Malvasia, both white grapes, and the wine aged in small oak barrels.

In 1971, it became a Tuscan red table wine rather than a Chianti Classico and was called Tignanello. In the 1975 vintage, the percentage of white grapes was definitively eliminated from the blend. Ever since 1982, the blend has been the one currently used. Tignanello is bottled only in favorable vintages, and was not produced in 1972, 1973, 1974, 1976, 1984, 1992, and 2002.

The 2016 Antinori Tignanello IGT is a proprietary red blend from Tuscany, Italy. This vintage is composed of 80% Sangiovese, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% Cabernet Franc, harvested from vines aged 15 to 20 years. The wine is bottled with a cork and has an alcohol content of 14%.

This vintage has garnered impressive reviews from multiple critics, reflecting its exceptional quality and aging potential. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded it a score of 97, with Monica Larner describing it as "a rock-solid wine and a stunning beauty." She highlighted its "impeccable level of precision and laser-focus delivery of fruits, spices, tilled earth, espresso beans, and Mediterranean herbs." Larner also noted that this vintage, compared to the 2015, is "more vibrant, nervous, and jazzed," with a beautifully integrated quality of tannins.

Wine Spectator, also awarding it a 97, praised the wine for its "black cherry and black currant fruit, accented by violet, mineral, and oak spice hints," adding that it shows "superb energy and a refined structure." They recommended that it be best enjoyed from 2024 through 2043.

James Suckling shared a similar high regard, giving the wine a 97 as well. He found "wonderful aromas of pine needles, rosemary, fresh mushrooms, bark, and dark fruit," and described it as "very tight and tannic" with undertones of "orange peel and wet earth."

Wine Enthusiast gave the highest score of 99, with Kerin O’Keefe noting its "fragrant, savory" profile, featuring aromas of "underbrush, plum, blue flower, cocoa, and camphor." The palate was described as boasting "juicy Marasca cherry, ripe blackberry, licorice, tobacco, and an appealing hint of game," balanced by silky tannins and bright acidity.

Wine & Spirits rated it 96, appreciating its "vibrant, harmonious" character due to the ideal growing season. They commended its "deeply concentrated flavors of blackberry, cherry, and plum" and the evolving notes of "tobacco, subtle spices, and dark chocolate."

Overall, the 2016 Antinori Tignanello IGT is highly acclaimed for its complexity, balance, and aging potential, making it a noteworthy addition to any wine collection.
