A tangy plum aroma meets turned soil on the rustic and rugged nose of this appellation blend by the historic winery, now owned by Duckhorn. With a gorgeous hue of ruby in the glass, this new release from Calera opens with an enticing nose of cherry cola, pomegranate and cranberry nuanced with red licorice and baked cinnamon. These are all nicely underpinned by a dry earth-like minerality. The whole transitions to the palate perfectly where the wine is lively and rich with velvety tannins and a solid spine of acidity. The finish is long and fruit driven with a persistent acidic kick till the end. Pair this with an assortment of poultry dishes or even make it your Thanksgiving wine. It’s a perfect Summer red as well. This 2016 is drinking nicely at release but it would probably cellar nicely for about 8 years or so.
