jamessuckling.com, February 2019

Plenty of menthol, blackberry and blackcurrant aromas in this elegant, medium-weight Haut-Médoc that’s got as much freshness as ripeness and a long, clean, mineral and herbal finish. An incredibly food-flexible wine!...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, February 2019

Medium/full-bodied, fresh, crisp, aromatic and filled with sweet, bright, red cherries and juicy, crunchy cassis with just a hint of hint on the nose. I am sure this will age quite nicely. Read more...

Wine Enthusiast, April 2019

Well-integrated tannins give this wine a rich, velvet character that is underlined by the blackberry fruits. The aftertaste is dense, concentrated and rich. Drink from 2025.

Decanter, October 2018

Sweet fruit on the nose is joined by plum and touches of vanillin. It has a southern Médoc feel, with almost-jammy fruit and a gourmet, damson streak. Edgy tannins hold the appealing, generous fruit, and the acidity is...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April 2017

(WA90-92 points) The 2016 Cantemerle has a tightly wound bouquet and it never quite delivers the detail and mineralité that some of its peers have produced in this vintage. There are attractive undergrowth scents and a...

hateau Cantemerle is a fifth growth Bordeaux estate in the Haut-Medoc which has a long history dating back to the Middle Ages. It had been under ownership of the Villeneuve de Durfort family for over three hundred years until it was sold by Jeanne Armande to the Dubos family in 1892.

The Dubos family managed the estate until it was sold in 1981 to the SMABTP group. Many parcels of vines were pulled up during the war and the difficult years of 1930-1940, leaving only 20 hectares planted on the estate’s 70 hectares of vineyard land.

Cantemerle was a property in distress after a long period of difficulties, thus, renovation of the technical facilities and replanting of the vineyard was undertaken in successive steps. Thirty-five hectares of land which had lain fallow for almost 50 years were planted within 2 years and by 1987, the vineyard had grown to 60 hectares. Now, 144 years later, Cantemerle had returned to its original size at the time of the 1855 classification—90 hectares.

The unique soil and microclimate are reflected in the wine's personality. Cantemerle has a brilliant color, a powerful bouquet, and a soft, lively flavor. It is rare to find such refined fruitiness. This great wine can be enjoyed young, when it is charming, fruity, and marked by a vanilla taste which comes from well-integrated oak. This makes Cantemerle an ideal choice for the modern wine drinker who likes fresh tannins.

However, it can also age extremely well. Fine, old vintages have impeccable class, with incomparable flavors of sheer elegance. Cantemerle therefore belongs to that rare category of the world's wines which can not only age, but also improve over several decades.

Introducing the 2016 Cantemerle, a Bordeaux Blend from the esteemed Bordeaux region of France. This red wine exudes elegance and sophistication, captivating both the eye and the palate. The wine is housed in a sleek bottle, adorned with a classic label that hints at the extraordinary experience that awaits.

In the glass, the Cantemerle displays a deep, ruby red color that is both alluring and inviting. As you raise the glass to your nose, the tightly wound bouquet begins to unfurl, revealing enticing aromas of undergrowth and a touch of tobacco. While not as exuberant as some of its peers in this vintage, the wine still possesses an undeniable charm.

On the palate, the Cantemerle showcases its medium-bodied structure and supple tannins. The depth of fruit is evident, with blackberry flavors intermingling with notes of cedar and graphite. The wine demonstrates good precision and tension, especially in subsequent samples, where the true potential of this vintage shines through.

Renowned wine critic Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded the 2016 Cantemerle an impressive score of 92 points, praising its depth of fruit and supple tannins. James Suckling, another respected critic, lauded the wine's menthol, blackberry, and blackcurrant aromas, as well as its long, clean, mineral and herbal finish. Wine Enthusiast also recognized the wine's well-integrated tannins, rich velvet character, and concentrated aftertaste, recommending to drink it from 2025.

The Cantemerle is a wine that can be enjoyed now, but also has the potential to age gracefully. Its incredible versatility makes it the perfect companion for a wide range of culinary delights. Whether paired with succulent meats or hearty vegetarian dishes, this wine will elevate any dining experience.

In conclusion, the 2016 Cantemerle is a Bordeaux Blend that embodies the essence of the Bordeaux region. With its refined character, impressive depth of fruit, and supple tannins, this wine is a testament to the artistry and passion of the Cantemerle winery. Indulge in this exceptional red wine and let it transport you to the heart of Bordeaux.
