Caparzo produced its first vintage of Brunello di Montalcino in 1970, when the situation in Montalcino was very different than it is now. At the time there were only 13 wineries in Montalcino, thus Caparzo is one of the historic Brunello producers. The distinguishing characteristic of Caparzo's Brunello di Montalcino is clearly the origin of its Sangiovese.

The estate is one of the few in Montalcino that has vineyards in the various geographic areas of the appellation. What might seem to be just a detail is actually quite positive, because the different locations of Caparzo's vineyards allow the estate to draw from most of the different microclimates and terroirs present in Montalcino.

The grapes are carefully selected to lay the foundations for a complex wine that brings together all the characteristics that make Brunello one of the world's most sought after wines.

The 2016 Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino is a Sangiovese Grosso wine from Tuscany, Italy. This vintage has been met with praise for its balanced composition and complex flavor profile, attracting high scores from several renowned wine critics.

James Suckling awarded the wine a score of 94, noting its "plum, ripe-berry and floral aromas with hints of sandalwood and fresh mushrooms." He described it as full-bodied with "firm, ripe tannins and a fresh, crushed-stone finish," recommending it be enjoyed after 2023 for optimal flavor development.

Wine Spectator was particularly impressed, giving the wine an excellent score of 96. The review highlights "ripe, sweet cherry and raspberry fruit" accompanied by "floral, mineral and wild herbs." It praises the wine's "dense, dusty tannins" and "excellent length," suggesting it will peak between 2023 and 2043.

Decanter gave the wine a score of 93, appreciating its "delicate lightness and lively brightness." The review mentions aromas of "violet, rosemary and liquorice" with "cool mint and brambly notes" on the palate, highlighting its easy-flowing and seamless nature with smooth tannins.

Jeb Dunnuck rated it 91, describing it as "medium-bodied and easy-drinking" with "fine tannins" and a fresh palate that includes "piney herbaceousness, confected black raspberry, and dried violets." He notes that it is ready for consumption now or can be enjoyed over the next few years.

Wine & Spirits awarded a score of 92, noting the wine's balanced flavors of "crunchy red cherry and black cherry" layered with "dried herbs, underbrush and a hint of cocoa." The review emphasizes the wine's "chewy tannins and bright core of acidity," suggesting it will be pleasurable for the next decade.

Overall, the 2016 Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino stands out for its harmonious blend of flavors and potential for aging, making it a notable choice for enthusiasts of Italian red wine.
