A blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, this red has alluring aromas of botanical herb, woodland berry, blue flower and a whiff of warm spice. Full bodied and loaded with finesse, the smooth, delicious palate doles out juicy raspberry, black cherry jam, tobacco and licorice before a coffee-bean finish. The Catello Banfi 2016 ExcelsuS (a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot) shows the clear intensity and persistency of the vintage with loads of dark fruit that is woven between layers of spice, tar, smoke and sweet tobacco. The wine shows a medium to full-weight approach that never stops feeling opulent and generous, especially in terms of mouthfeel. It finishes with plenty of dark, fruity succulence and texture. Some 20,000 bottles were made.- ML
