The most effortlessly brilliant vintage in St Julien, and Saint Pierre is right up there with the best of examples you can find. Smoky and sculpted, still chewy tannins, firm but confident, liqourice and campfire smoke...

This is fantastic, offering lots of fresh tobacco and blackcurrants and undertones of hazelnuts and chocolate. Full-bodied with firm and chewy tannins, yet ever so polished and refined. One of the most structured St...

(96+ points) Coming from 50-year-old vines and a blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Château Saint-Pierre (Saint-Julien) is in the same ballpark as the 2015 yet shows a...

This has evolved beautifully. The oak has integrated and the palate has filled out. Now, you find a lush expression of blackberries, cassis, tobacco and dark cherries. Full, deep, rich, and long, with 60 minutes in the...

Vinous, August 2020

The 2016 Saint-Pierre has an intriguing bouquet of baked black cherries, dark chocolate, espresso and gamy notes, the oak regime more prominent compared to its peers within this Saint-Julien flight. The palate is...

Decanter, April 2021

This estate is the smallest and least-known cru classé in the St-Julien appellation, with a mere 17 hectares of vineyards with deep gravel soils. Most of these are not far from Beychevelle. This property has a...

94+ Aged for 14 months in 50% new and 50% one-year-old French oak and blended of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc, the deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Saint-Pierre leaps from the glass with...

The Wine Independent, December 2022

The 2016 Saint-Pierre is deep garnet in color. It soars from the glass with expressive scents of cassis, blackberry pie, and plum preserves, plus hints of pencil shavings, tilled soil, and black truffles. Medium-bodied...

Wine Enthusiast, April 2017

(WE92-94 points) Ripe and fruity while also having just the right amount of structure, this is a concentrated wine. It has depth and fine, elegant acidity, and is likely to be ready from 2026.

This is packed, with a ganache frame wrapping up a dense core of blueberry, black currant, fig and açaí berry reduction flavors that will need time to stretch out. While they do, they'll meld with the warm tar and sweet...

The grapes for Saint-Pierre’s red wine are picked by hand and vinified in the traditional way in heat-regulated stainless steel vats. The wine then spends 14 to 16 months being aged in casks, half of which are replaced every year. The wine is typically a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.

Château Saint-Pierre is a Fourth Growth (1855) from Saint‑Julien, and at roughly 17 hectares it is the appellation’s smallest cru classé. The 2016 vintage sits in the estate’s modern upswing, with Decanter noting that “investment in improving the vineyards and cellar began in 2005,” that the wines have been “over performing since 2014,” and that “new cellars debuted in 2016.” The vineyard’s deep gravel soils are a consistent theme in its identity and structure.

In 2016 the blend is clearly defined: 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, and 6% Cabernet Franc, raised for 14 months in 50% new and 50% one‑year French oak (Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate; Decanter). Jane Anson also reports harvest dates of “September 29 to October 17” and confirms “50% new oak.”

Across critics, the wine reads as a classically built Saint‑Julien with depth, tobacco‑and‑cassis character, and firm tannins that need time. James Suckling’s 96‑point review calls it “very polished and poised,” with “fresh tobacco and blackcurrants… hazelnuts and chocolate,” adding that it is “one of the most structured St. Pierre’s in years” and suggesting, “Try from 2024.” Jeb Dunnuck’s excellent 96+ points describes “fine tannin, flawless balance and integration, no hard edges,” calling it a “brilliant wine” built to age 25–30 years.

Other strong assessments reinforce the picture. Wine Spectator (94) says it’s “packed,” with a “ganache frame” and a long window “Best from 2025 through 2040.” Vinous is consistently high, with Antonio Galloni (94) calling it “powerful” and “huge on the palate, with tremendous depth and exceptional balance,” while Neal Martin (95) finds it “nicely detailed and very poised,” with bottle age likely to help.

The top review is Anson’s 97, calling 2016 “the most effortlessly brilliant vintage in St Julien,” and placing Saint‑Pierre “right up there with the best,” “smoky and sculpted” with “chewy tannins” and a “mineral tingle.” Recent tastings suggest it is delivering earlier than expected with air: Jeff Leve (95) reports it has “evolved beautifully,” and that with decanting “this really kicked into high-gear.”
