Lovely, well-judged extraction here with a kick of spice and black cherry fruits. The body is rich and dark purple with a clear elegance to the core of the wine. The tannins are evident, and give an extra kick. Good quality.

Domaine de Chevalier of the Pessac-Leognan appellation is classified as a Grand Cru Classe de Graves. The property belonged to the Ricard family from 1865 until it was purchased by its current owners, the Bernard family, in 1983. It is one of a very few Bordeaux estates to have kept its “domaine” title instead of using the the more popular “chateau” designation.

The estate covers a hundred hectares, of which 45 are under vine: 40 for the property’s red wines, and 5 for its whites. The vineyards are planted with 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot for the red wines, and 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Semillon for the white wines. Soils are dark sand and fine white gravel.

Domaine de Chevalier has been run since acquisition by Olivier Bernard, who perpetuates that spirit of balance and the constant drive for perfection which have been the hallmark of their outstanding wines. The flagship red belongs to the elite of the great classified growths of Bordeaux, while the white is recognized as one of the world’s finest dry wines. The domaine also produces red and white second wines under the Esprit de Chevalier label, which are made from the estate’s young vines.

The 2016 Domaine de Chevalier L'Esprit de Chevalier Rouge is a Bordeaux Blend from Pessac Leognan, Bordeaux, France. This red wine is a true expression of the region's terroir and craftsmanship, showcasing the exceptional quality that Domaine de Chevalier is known for.

In the glass, this wine presents a rich and dark purple color, hinting at its depth and intensity. The nose is beautifully fragrant, with captivating aromas of blackberry and cherry, complemented by delicate notes of oak. The bouquet is further enhanced by subtle hints of spice, tobacco, and earth, adding complexity and intrigue.

On the palate, the L'Esprit de Chevalier reveals a medium to full-bodied structure, with finely etched dry tannins and bright acidity. This balance of elements creates a harmonious and elegant mouthfeel, demonstrating the meticulous winemaking techniques employed by Domaine de Chevalier. The fruit flavors are concentrated and luscious, with black cherries, blackberries, and warm plums taking center stage. These flavors are accompanied by touches of baking spices, tobacco, and a touch of white pepper, adding layers of complexity and depth.

The finish is long, crisp, and minerally, leaving a lasting impression on the palate. With a ton of energy and vitality, this wine shows great aging potential, and it is recommended to be enjoyed starting from 2021. The L'Esprit de Chevalier is the second wine of Domaine de Chevalier, crafted from a blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and 10% Petit Verdot, showcasing the estate's commitment to quality and excellence.

With a score of 90-94 points from esteemed wine critics such as Decanter, James Suckling, Jeb Dunnuck, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Vinous, and Wine Spectator, this wine has received widespread acclaim for its outstanding quality and character. It is a true gem of Bordeaux, representing the essence of the region and the artistry of Domaine de Chevalier.
