jamessuckling.com, April 2022

Lots of blueberries, ripe blackberries, violets, peppercorns, olives and cloves on the nose. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, fleshy tannins. Beautiful blue fruit and flowers. Layered and long. Drink after 2023.

The Wine Independent, December 2022

A blend of 64.3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35.3% Merlot, and 0.4% Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Les Forts de Latour is deep garnet-purple in color. It is just a touch closed to begin, soon unfurling to deliver wonderfully pure, ripe...

Wine Enthusiast, January 1970

(94–96 points) Barrel Sample. This is a great wine, with superb tannins and rich fruit flavors that are in balance. Made from 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, the palate is dominated by black-currant flavor and a pleasant...

Decanter, November 2021

Violet scented dark black cherries and figs on the nose, quite powerful. Tannins are generous but they're juicy and plump, soft almost chalky, they have a really great impact, filling the mouth together with the fruit...

jebdunnuck.com, August 2022

The second wine of this great château, the 2016 Les Forts De Latour continues to impress. I commented on release that it was the best wine in the vintage, and my opinion hasn't changed. This beauty offers plenty of...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, March 2022

The 2016 Les Forts de Latour is superb, unwinding in the glass with notions of blackcurrants, wild berries, sweet loamy soil, cigar wrapper and English walnuts. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it’s concentrated...

The Wine Palate, February 2026

Deep garnet‑purple in color, exuberant scents of kirsch, blueberry preserves, blackcurrant pastilles, and star anise come bounding out of the glass of the 2016 Les Forts de Latour, followed by aromatic nuances of cumin...

Vinous, March 2022

The 2016 Les Forts de Latour has a gorgeous bouquet, extremely pure and floral, veins of blue fruit, cassis permeating the blackberry fruit. The palate is beautifully balanced, again, very saline and a little spicier than...

Wine Spectator, January 2019

A bit fleshier and more caressing than a typical Pauillac, this has flavors of warm fig, currant and blackberry preserves inlaid with charcoal and smoldering tobacco notes. There's grip for sure and a twinge of warm cast...

The 2016 Les Forts de Latour, the second wine of Château Latour in Pauillac, delivers a notably serious expression of the estate in a vintage that suits its structured style. The blend is 64.3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35.3% Merlot, and 0.4% Cabernet Franc, and it was aged in 50% new oak; listed alcohol is 13.5%. This was also the first year Latour completed conversion to organic viticulture across the estate (certification followed in 2018).

Across the board, reviews are excellent, with multiple 95–96 point scores that place it at the top of the second-wine category in 2016. James Suckling gives 96 points and emphasizes aromatic lift and length, citing “blueberries, ripe blackberries, violets, peppercorns, olives and cloves,” with “firm, fleshy tannins” and a “layered and long” finish, recommending to “drink after 2023.” Jeb Dunnuck (95) is similarly emphatic, calling it “the best wine in the vintage” and praising “classic Latour character” with “blackcurrants, saddle leather, lead pencil shavings, and dried flowers,” adding it is “perfectly balanced” and set to drink well for “another 2+ decades.”

The Wine Advocate’s William Kelley (95) frames it as a classic, cellar-worthy Pauillac: “concentrated and tightly wound,” with “lively acids and ripe, powdery tannins,” concluding it is “impeccably balanced” and “worth a special effort to seek out.” Decanter (95) highlights both power and harmony, noting “generous” tannins that are “juicy and plump,” and a “long finish with the flavours going on and on.”

Neal Martin for Vinous (95) points to purity and definition—“extremely pure and floral… cassis”—with a “beautifully balanced” palate and enough backbone to reward patience. Wine Spectator (94) finds it “a bit fleshier and more caressing than a typical Pauillac,” but with clear grip and finish purity, advising 2023–2035.
