A soft and very silky Monbousquet with wonderfully caressing texture. Full body. Delicious crushed cherries and berries. Beautiful length, too. Hard not to drink now. Better after 2024.

This classic, elegant vintage plays fabulously well at this address. Beautiful blackcurrants, cassis, gravelly minerality, and chocolate all emerge from this full-bodied Saint-Emilion that has another level of purity and elegance over every other vintage I’ve tasted. It delivers loads of pleasure today and will do the same in 15 years as well. Bravo! collapse

Full-bodied with a very compelling minerally restraint on the palate, it has a great intensity of red and black fruits with plush tannins and a lively lift to the finish. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown collapse

Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, mocha, espresso and spice abound. The 2016 has all the richness that has always showed from barrel, but with an extra kick of freshness and aromatic lift. The 2016 has certainly come together beautifully over the course of its aging. There is a lot to like in this voluptuous, immediate Saint-Émilion. -- Antonio Galloni collapse

This full, generous wine has tannins that integrate well with the rich berry fruits. There is a touch of smokiness as well as spice, toast and a final velvet texture. Drink this accessible wine from 2023. ROGER VOSS

Winery

Monbousquet

Chateau Monbousquet is a Saint-Emilion wine estate dating back to 1540. The estate prospered and achieved great fame during the second half of the 19th century under the brief but inspired direction of Comte de Vassal-Montviel. He enlarged the vineyard, bringing it to its present size and making it one of the largest estates in Saint-Emilion.

The arrival of Chantal and Gerard Perse in 1993 started a new chapter in the chateau’s story, ushering in a veritable “leap in quality”. Production standards were completely revised both in the vineyards and in the cellars, with state-of-the-art installations suitable for producing a great wine. Gerard Perse also planted the first white vines in Saint-Emilion. His efforts paid off and in 2006 Monbousquet was promoted to the rank of a Grand Cru Classe.

The estate includes 32 hectares of vines planted with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon on warm, deep gravel soils to the south and sandy-clay soils to the north. The average age of the vines is 38 years. Three wines are produced on the estate: two red wines, the main wine Monbousquet and the second wine Angelique de Monbousquet, and a white wine, Monbousquet Blanc, from the small parcel of white wine grapes.
