Riserva Madonna del Piano, hails from one of the first and best single-vineyard sites in Montalcino, with production dating back to 1977. Made only in the best vintages and from the oldest vines on the property, in 1994 Valdicava was granted the right to list the Madonna del Piano vineyard designation on the label. The 19.5 hectare single vineyard is divided into four parts: old vines, Pievecchina, Pratea and Sferracavallo. Owner Vincenzo Abbruzzese harvests the vines from each part of the vineyard at different times and makes the wines separately before blending them together. The wine is then aged about two years in large old casks and another two years in bottle.

The 2016 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano is a notable expression of Sangiovese Grosso from Tuscany's prestigious Brunello di Montalcino region. This wine has garnered high praise from multiple reviewers, highlighting its complexity and elegance.

James Suckling, who scored it a near-perfect 99 points, describes this wine as "heavenly on the nose" with notes of violets and cherries, underpinned by sandalwood. He emphasizes its full-bodied nature and fine tannins, suggesting that it will benefit from cellaring until at least 2027.

Wine Spectator also awarded this Brunello a high score of 98 points, noting its expressive yet complex character, with tertiary hints of truffle and fading roses. The review mentions an array of flavors, including cherry, raspberry, and anise, all supported by a firm structure and an "endless finish." The publication recommends enjoying this wine between 2025 and 2045.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and Vinous both rated this wine at 96 points, with each review highlighting the wine's balance and power. Monica Larner from the Wine Advocate finds the balance between fruit weight, acidity, and bouquet to be impressive. Eric Guido from Vinous praises the wine for its captivating depth, energy, and tension, with notes of cherries, plums, and a mineral finish.

Jeb Dunnuck matched Suckling's high score with another 99, emphasizing the wine's deep ruby color and rich perfume, which unfolds with aromas of lavender, black cherry, and fresh leather. Dunnuck describes its texture as velveteen and forecasts a slow evolution, recommending it be enjoyed between 2026 and 2050.

Overall, the 2016 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano is a wine of substantial acclaim, characterized by its complexity, balance, and aging potential.
