Very perfumed and subtle with dried flowers and citrus, as well as blue fruit. Full-bodied with wonderfully diffused, integrated tannins that just run over the edges of the wine. It’s extremely polished and very, very...

Decanter, November 2019

Beautifully powerful and precise with great depth and character to the fruit, despite the austerity that is more evident now than it was during En Primeur as the wine has begun bed down. These tannins are finely boned but...

Finesse and elegance, typical of the great wines of Margaux, are the trademarks of Chateau Palmer. The unusual combination of grape varieties for a classified Left Bank wine–as much Merlot as Cabernet Sauvignon and a small amount of Petit Verdot–gives Chateau Palmer a bouquet of extraordinary complexity, with fruit, flowers, and spice wrapped in a fleshy and generous structure. The subtle balance between aromatic richness and powerful, yet always restrained, tannins makes Palmer charming even when very young.

The grapes are fermented separately by variety and plot in 54 conical, stainless steel vats. The wine then ages 18 to 21 months in French oak barrels, less than 50% new.

The 2017 Chateau Palmer is a Bordeaux Blend from the Margaux sub-region of Bordeaux, France. Comprising 54% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 4% Petit Verdot, this vintage has been widely praised for its complexity and potential for aging.

Decanter awarded this wine an impressive 97 points, describing it as "beautifully powerful and precise with great depth and character to the fruit." The reviewer noted the finely boned tannins and highlighted the wine's concentration, intensity, and seriousness, predicting it will age well.

Vinous also rated the 2017 Chateau Palmer highly, giving it 96 points. Antonio Galloni appreciated its fresh and vibrant character, with "tons of energy" and supporting salinity and floral overtones. He mentioned the presence of dark fruit, mocha, spice, leather, and licorice notes, although he found the wine somewhat reticent at this stage.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate echoed the high praise, scoring it 97 points. The review highlighted the wine's "very serious nose of pronounced blackcurrant cordial, warm plums and blackberry preserves." The palate, noted for its vibrant, crunchy black fruits and firm texture of ripe, grainy tannins, promises a long, mineral-laced finish.

Wine Spectator gave the wine 95 points, describing it as "dark and winey in feel, with ample blackberry, plum and black currant compote flavors." They emphasized the wine's powerful nature and strong effort for the vintage.

Wine Enthusiast also awarded it 95 points, praising its balance and classic nature. Roger Voss noted the mingling of fruit and supple tannins, suggesting it will develop well and provide long-term pleasure.

Jeb Dunnuck, with a 95+ score, called it a "deep purple-colored beauty" with cassis fruits, chocolate, graphite, smoked herbs, and crushed violets. He highlighted the wine's concentration, richness, and full-bodied nature.

James Suckling gave it the highest score of 98 points, remarking on its "very perfumed and subtle" nature with dried flowers, citrus, and blue fruit. He praised its integrated tannins and energetic finish, recommending it be enjoyed after 2023.

Jeff Leve, Jane Anson, and The Wine Independent all gave the wine high marks, noting its exotic spice, floral aromatics, and tightly wound fruit layers. Jasper Morris, while slightly less enthusiastic with a 93-point score, still acknowledged its powerful nose and sweet black cherry palate.

Overall, the 2017 Chateau Palmer is a highly regarded wine, with reviewers praising its complexity, elegance, and potential for long-term aging.
