Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona is a premiere wine estate located on the southwest side of the Montalcino municipality in Castelnuovo dell’Abate. It covers a vast area of 170 hectares, encircled by vineyards, olive groves, woods, grain and pasture lands, at an altitude of 790 to 1,200 feet. The history of the estate dates back to the 17th century when the Palazzo, the oldest part of the property, was built by Montalcino’s bishop, Fabivs de’ Vecchis of Sant’ Antimo Abbey.

Due to its strategic position and ideal microclimate, the Pianrosso Vineyard is the best expression of the estate. It is the source of the best grapes for the Brunello Pianrosso and Brunello Riserva Vigna di Pianrosso wines.

The 2017 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Sant'Antimo Fabius is a Syrah varietal produced in Tuscany, Italy. This particular wine is crafted by the renowned winemaker Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona. The wine is a deep red color and is sealed with a traditional cork closure. With an alcohol content of 14.5%, this Syrah is a robust and full-bodied red wine.

The 2017 vintage has garnered a favorable review from Wine Enthusiast, which awarded it a solid score of 90 points. Reviewer Kerin O’Keefe provides a detailed tasting note, highlighting the wine’s aromatic and flavor profile. According to O’Keefe, the wine "opens with black-skinned berry, cedar and green peppercorn aromas." These initial scents set the stage for a complex and layered tasting experience.

On the palate, the wine is described as having "fine-grained tannins" that support a range of flavors including "ripe black currant, tobacco, and licorice." This suggests a well-structured wine with a balance of fruitiness and more earthy, spicy elements. The tannins are noted for their quality, indicating a smooth yet substantial mouthfeel.

The review advises that the wine is best enjoyed through 2026, giving it a drinking window that allows for some aging to further develop its flavors. This makes it a versatile option for both immediate consumption and short-term cellaring.

In summary, the 2017 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Sant'Antimo Fabius Syrah is a noteworthy wine from Tuscany, praised for its aromatic complexity and balanced palate. With accolades from Wine Enthusiast, it stands out as a quality choice for Syrah enthusiasts and those looking to explore Italian red wines.
