Weingut Gantenbein’s Pinot Noir 2017 is a small-estate Swiss red from Fläsch in the Graubünden AOC, made entirely from Pinot Noir (Blauburgunder). The winery, run by Martha and Daniel Gantenbein since 1982, has a reputation for meticulous, low-yield viticulture and gentle handling in a gravity-flow cellar designed to work “without pumps or filters,” with the wine bottled without fining or filtration.

In style, this is a Pinot Noir built on both ripeness and definition. In a barrel sample assessment for *Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate*, Stephan Reinhardt describes it as “very intense and fruity on the nose,” noting that at the time it was “still with yeasty notes” because it was tasted from an early, newly assembled sample. That context matters: the aromatic profile he reports reflects a wine still settling, rather than a fully integrated, finished bottle.

On the palate, Reinhardt’s note points to why Gantenbein has become a reference point for Swiss Pinot. He calls the 2017 “concentrated and lush, very fine and elegant,” emphasizing “great finesse and intensity.” He also underlines the wine’s structure and precision, writing that it is “generous but fresh and structured, with crystalline acidity and minerality.” Those phrases sketch a Pinot that aims to combine depth of fruit with clear-cut acidity and a mineral edge, rather than leaning purely into sweetness or softness.

Winemaking choices support that ambition. The estate ferments in custom open-top wooden vats and ages the wine in 100% new French oak barriques, a decidedly Burgundian approach that can add texture and spice when balanced by sufficient fruit and acidity. Alcohol is listed at 13% ABV.

Reinhardt’s appraisal is an excellent early review at 94 points, concluding simply: “Very promising.” Combined with the estate’s track record and limited distribution, the 2017 stands as a serious, structured Pinot Noir with both richness and control.
