janeanson.com, September 2021

A lighter-framed vintage that will be ready to drink before the classic 10 year window. You see hints of this immediately in the plum colour, with shadings of a lighter raspberry around the rim even at four years old. The...

jamessuckling.com, January 2020

Aromas of fresh raspberries with some lemon peel and fresh herbs follow through to a full to medium body. Fresh herbs and graphite highlight the wine. Chewy finish. Needs time to soften. Better after 2022.

TheWineCellarInsider.com, October 2023

Classic, and classy with a refreshing, mint-leaf edge to the crisp, chewy, sweet, vibrant red fruits on the nose, and on the medium-bodied, energetic, crunchy palate. Drink from 2025-2045.

Vinous, May 2018

(VN 91-93 points) The 2017 Grand Puy Lacoste was picked from 15 to 29 September cropped at 45hl/ha, matured in 75% new oak. It has a clean, precise and conservative bouquet that takes time to open. I like the mineral...

The Wine Independent, September 2022

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Grand-Puy-Lacoste slowly emerges from the glass with evocative notes of kirsch, fresh boysenberries, and redcurrant preserves, followed by hints of rosehip tea, dried Provence herbs...

Wine Spectator, March 2020

A taut and minerally version, defined by a chalky underpinning that harnesses the core of damson plum, bitter cherry and red currant fruit. Streaks of cedar, chestnut and bay leaf mark the finish. Shows the austere...

Wine Enthusiast, March 2020

This is a stylish wine that displays plenty of black currant fruit framed by fine tannins. Medium bodied, the it has a juicy core that is already attractive, but for best enjoyment, drink from 2023. - ROGER VOSS

Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste, one of the oldest properties in the Medoc, has a long history dating back to the 16th century. It was under ownership of a single family for generations, until sold by the Lacoste family in 1920 and finally acquired by the Borie family in 1978.

The name Grand-Puy comes from the ancient term “puy” which means “hillock, small height”. True to its name, the vineyard of Grand-Puy-Lacoste sits on outcrops that rise to around 20 meters above sea level.

Long before the 1855 Classification, Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste’s reputation was recognized for quality. In 1776, Saint Guirons & Lacoste (its name at that time) was ranked fifth in a classification of Pauillac estates by the King's Intendant in Aquitaine, Dupre de Saint-Maur. The estate’s reputation for quality grew and the Bordeaux Classification made the “fifth growth” ranking official, placing it among the “elite” of Bordeaux wines.

Since 1978, Francois-Xavier Borie has guided Grand-Puy-Lacoste's fortunes. Major investments were made and restorations and renovations were undertaken. 58 hectares of the estate’s 90 hectares are planted with 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc.

Today, with the help of his eldest daughter, Emeline, Francois-Xavier Borie has raised Grand-Puy-Lacoste to the level of a "great Pauillac" and ensures that it maintains that status. Among Pauillac wines, Grand-Puy-Lacoste is considered "a great classic”, capable of aligning its consistent character with the spirit of each vintage.

The wines of Grand-Puy-Lacoste have a beautiful, deep color and the aromas are very pure and complex, subtle and refined. Depending on the vintage, one's first impression may be of ripe fruit or flowers, often toasted notes, spice and vanilla. With time it develops a remarkably full, rich character.

In the mouth one is struck by its elegant individuality. The flavors support and amplify its aromatic sensations with a notably large range of fruit, particularly cassis, which develops with age. The wines are well-built, with powerful tannic structure which never loses its silky smoothness.

By nature a wine for long aging, Grand-Puy-Lacoste needs between eight and ten years to reveal its full potential.

The 2017 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a Bordeaux Blend that hails from the esteemed Pauillac region of Bordeaux, France. This red wine showcases the artistry and craftsmanship of the renowned producer, Grand-Puy-Lacoste. With its captivating deep red color and elegant label, this wine is a visual delight.

On the nose, the 2017 Grand-Puy-Lacoste offers a delightful blend of aromas. Fresh raspberries take center stage, accompanied by hints of lemon peel and fresh herbs. As you delve deeper into the wine, subtle notes of graphite and fresh herbs emerge, adding complexity and intrigue.

The palate of this wine is equally enchanting. It presents a medium to full body, with fine grain tannins that provide structure and balance. The flavors on the palate mirror the aromatic profile, with cedar and tobacco-infused red and black fruit taking the spotlight. The finish is long and chewy, with a slight peppery note that lingers on the tongue.

Several reputable wine critics have lauded the 2017 Grand-Puy-Lacoste, with scores ranging from 91 to 94 points. James Suckling describes it as a wine that needs time to soften, recommending enjoying it after 2022. Jeff Leve emphasizes its classic and classy nature, highlighting the refreshing mint-leaf edge and vibrant red fruits. Meanwhile, Vinous praises its mineral tension, focus, and potential for long-term aging.

Overall, the 2017 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a wine of exquisite craftsmanship and undeniable charm. Its elegant profile, balanced structure, and potential for aging make it a standout choice for both collectors and enthusiasts. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for a few more years, this wine promises to provide a memorable and captivating experience with every sip.
