James Halliday, August 2020

This achieves another step up the quality ladder for Leeuwin Estate, seemingly impossible. There's been no change in the vinification, nor in the vineyard. The change is an increase in the intensity of the flavours, and...

Wine Front, March 2020

Sometimes you just have to lean back and marvel. The art of Margaret River chardonnay. This is it. You don’t just drink a wine like this, you set it in your mind as a benchmark. It’s a wine built on power, texture and...

jamessuckling.com, April 2020

Such complexity and resolve make for a very attractive nose with peaches, grapefruit, cedary oak spice, gunflint and wet stones. The palate has a plush, smoothly resolved texture with a rich, creamy texture and...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, February 2024

The 2017 vintage in Margaret River was a cool one; it was wet and cool and threw up many challenges for producers in the area. Having said that, the success stories are the ones who toiled in the vineyard and made...

Wine & Spirits, October 2020

The Horgan family set out to grow a long-lived chardonnay at their coastal estate in Margaret River. For them, that includes fermentation of the entire lot in new French oak barrels, an ambitious choice that can crush New...

Wine Enthusiast, December 2020

This rich bottle is made for the long haul, and while the toasty, brioche characters of the barrel are prominent, so are the lemon-lime popsicle and peach cobbler notes. There's a lovely, lifted line of acidity on the...

Leeuwin Estate is a family-owned Australian winery and one of the five founding wineries in the now famous Margaret River district of Western Australia. Formerly a cattle ranch, the property was converted to vineyards by Denis and Tricia Horgan upon the advice of legendary Napa Valley winemaker Robert Mondavi when he visited Australia and saw the estate’s potential as being ideal for the production of premium wines.

The estate enjoyed its first commercial vintage in 1979 and was quickly thrust into the international spotlight when Decanter Magazine gave its highest recommendation to the 1980 "Art Series" Chardonnay. Leeuwin now exports to 30 markets. The estate releases wines under the Art Series, Prelude Vineyards and Siblings labels.

Celebrating the combination of fine wine, food, art and music, Leeuwin features an award winning restaurant, cellar door and art gallery. The estate is renowned for staging spectacular events and welcoming visitors from around the world.

The “Art Series” represents Leeuwin’s most opulent & age-worthy wines from each vintage. They are identified with paintings commissioned from leading contemporary Australian artists.

Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnay is aromatically complex and packed with flavor but maintains vivid acidity. The wine is fruit forward, typically citrus-driven but also showing pear and nuances of stone fruit. Oak-aging adds depth and gentle accents, such as cinnamon, but no overt woody notes. The wines easily age, and improve, for a good 15 years.

Introducing the exquisite 2017 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art Series, a true masterpiece from Western Australia's renowned Margaret River region. This white wine is a testament to the exceptional quality and craftsmanship that Leeuwin Estate consistently delivers.

In the glass, this Chardonnay showcases a luminous straw-yellow color that shimmers with elegance. With each swirl of the glass, captivating aromas fill the air, revealing a symphony of peaches, grapefruit, and cedary oak spice. The nose is further elevated by notes of gunflint and wet stones, adding a layer of complexity and intrigue.

On the palate, the 2017 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art Series displays a plush and smoothly resolved texture that caresses the senses. A rich and creamy mouthfeel envelops the palate, carrying ripe stone-fruit flavors that leave a lasting impression. The finish is exceptionally long and smooth, leaving behind lingering impressions of grilled hazelnuts and apricot kernels.

This wine has received high praise from critics, further solidifying its status as a true gem. James Suckling awarded it an impressive 96 points, praising its complexity and rich texture. Wine Front also bestowed it with a remarkable 97 points, describing it as a benchmark wine with power, texture, and length.

Wine Spectator awarded this Chardonnay 96 points, commending its rich and lush character, with flavors of grilled pineapple, ripe pear, and fleshy apricot. They noted the fresh thread of acidity and the sense of precision, which adds depth and balance to the wine.

Renowned wine critic James Halliday was particularly impressed, awarding this wine an outstanding 99 points. He hailed it as an extraordinary wine, comparable to the greatest of Burgundy and other renowned wine regions around the world.

While this wine is already a delight to drink, it also possesses remarkable aging potential. With a screw cap closure, it offers the convenience of immediate enjoyment, but it can also be cellared for a decade or longer, allowing its flavors to evolve and develop further.

The 2017 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art Series is a true masterpiece that exemplifies the art of Margaret River Chardonnay. It is a wine that demands attention and sets the standard for excellence. Whether enjoyed now or in the years to come, this wine will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on any wine enthusiast fortunate enough to experience it.
