Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, March 2026

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Rauzan-Ségla rocks up with vibrant notions of cherry pie, warm cassis, blackberry preserves and red roses with hints of cinnamon stick and cloves. Medium to full-bodied, the...

The Wine Independent, March 2024

A blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2017 Rauzan-Segla is medium to deep garnet in color. It waltzes out, with up-front notes of raspberry preserves, redcurrant jelly, and mulberries...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, May 2020

One of the top wines of the appellation, this gorgeous, soft, polished, silky, fresh, charmer comes with loads of ripe, lush, sweet fruit. The entry is soft, clean and fresh. The mid-palate and finish leave with the...

Wine Enthusiast, March 2020

This is a powerful, dense wine. Tannins come through strongly as does the dynamic black fruit. Likely to develop slowly, the wine's concentration is impressive. Drink from 2024. - ROGER VOSS

Decanter, November 2029

Cinnamon, saffron, black truffles, toasted oak, cedar and damson; this is definitely a pretty sexy take on the vintage. No doubt the extraction had to be extremely carefully handled to get here, and they have done a good...

There’s a very balanced feel to this wine with ripe blueberries and red plums, as well as dried flowers. The palate has a supple, smooth build of rich, blueberry and cassis flavor and a long, fine-tannin finish. A blend...

janeanson.com, June 2026

Creamy black fruits, fresh tobacco leaf, soft tannins. Give it a moment and a tawny grilled toffee generosity creeps in, alongside soft juicy acidities. In its drinking window as so many 2017s are right now. No doubt will...

The Wine Palate, July 2026

The Segla 2017 is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. It leaps with spritely notes of kirsch, blackberry preserves, and redcurrant jelly, plus wafts of fallen leaves and spice cake. Medium-bodied, the delicately styled...

Château Rauzan-Ségla 2017 is a Margaux red that reflects a difficult growing season—spring frost is often cited for 2017—yet the château’s strict selection aimed for “quality over quantity.” The Grand Vin accounted for about 55% of the harvest, according to Jeff Leve (The Wine Cellar Insider). Harvest dates are consistently reported around September 12 into early October, and the wine is built on a classic left-bank blend: 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot (Leve; James Suckling; Jeb Dunnuck; Wine Advocate). Leve also reports 13.0% alcohol and pH 3.68.

Aromatically, reviewers converge on dark fruit and floral Margaux markers. James Suckling calls it “very balanced… with ripe blueberries and red plums, as well as dried flowers,” while Jeb Dunnuck highlights “cassis, crushed violets, tobacco, and leafy herbs,” framing it as “Pure Margaux on the palate.” Lisa Perrotti-Brown (Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate) describes a “profound nose of cassis, warm blackberries and black plums” layered with “baking spices, violets, mocha and smoke.”

The palate profile is more about polish than power. Leve notes a “luxurious, concentrated and bright” wine whose texture feels like fruit “polished with velvet,” while Perrotti-Brown emphasizes “fine-grained tannins and a lively backbone” and “great length.” Wine Spectator’s James Molesworth finds it “inviting” and “suave,” with damson plum, red currant and blackberry carried by “very fine acidity,” recommending it “Best from 2022 through 2035.”

Several reviews are excellent. Leve and Wine Advocate both land at 96 points, and Wine Enthusiast rates it 95, calling it “powerful” and “dense… likely to develop slowly.” At the same time, Decanter and Jane Anson both note it is “a little less concentrated” than 2016/2018, suggesting it offers earlier approachability without losing estate signature. Oak regimes are reported at 60% new French oak (Dunnuck; Decanter; Anson), underscoring the wine’s structured, age-worthy intent.
