Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, March 2020

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Trotanoy is 100% Merlot and begins quite stubborn and broody on the nose at this youthful stage, needing a lot of coaxing to reveal a core of plum preserves, blackberry pie...

Pomerol’s famous Trotanoy, whose soil was too hard to work and thus called “trop anoi” (too annoying) in medieval French, is located on one of the most beautiful parts of the Pomerol plateau. The fascinating soil diversity—half gravel mixed with clay and half deep black clay —with the presence of “machefer” or iron pan in the subsoil, brings power, depth and complexity to the wine.

Chateau Trotanoy’s vineyard was one of the few not to freeze in 1956 and today, it is comprised of very old vines, the average being close to 35 years. 90% of the vines are Merlot, the rest Cabernet Franc.

Trotanoy was acquired by Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix, who own many other properties in both Pomerol and Saint-Emilion, including Magdelaine, Belair-Monange, La Fleur-Petrus, Lafleur-Gazin, Lagrange, Latour a Pomerol, and Hosanna.

Trotanoy is vinified in small concrete vats and the young wine matures in 50% new oak barrels for about 18 months. When ready, this wine shows enormous complexity and concentration. It can easily be kept 25 years or more in great vintages.

The 2017 Trotanoy is a Bordeaux Blend red wine from the esteemed Pomerol region of Bordeaux, France. This wine is a true gem, earning high praise from critics and wine enthusiasts alike. With a deep garnet-purple color, it immediately catches the eye and promises a luxurious experience.

On the nose, the 2017 Trotanoy exudes elegance and precision. Aromas of violets, blueberries, cedar, fresh truffle, wet earth, and plums create a symphony of scents that captivate the senses. It is a very pure nose that showcases the wine's poise and meticulous craftsmanship.

The palate offers a full and plush core of pristinely ripened red-plum fruit, accompanied by mouthwatering freshness. The wine's intense flavors are perfectly balanced by tannins that provide great clarity and structure. It is a triumph for the vintage, displaying incredible depth and complexity.

Renowned wine critic James Suckling awards the 2017 Trotanoy an outstanding score of 99 points, praising its impeccable composition and balanced finish. Meanwhile, Jeff Leve from TheWineCellarInsider.com describes it as a "stunner" and urges all Pomerol lovers to prioritize experiencing this wine.

The 2017 Trotanoy is crafted from 100% Merlot grapes grown on gravelly, clay, and iron-laced soils on the plateau of Pomerol. It is a medium to full-bodied wine with a stacked mid-palate and building tannins. While it is already impressive, it will benefit from further bottle aging and has the potential to drink brilliantly for two decades or more.

This wine is a true testament to the classic, elegant style of the vintage. It showcases more fruit and texture than most wines, making it a standout choice for collectors and enthusiasts. With its long aging potential, the 2017 Trotanoy promises to evolve and develop in the bottle, rewarding those who have the patience to wait.

In conclusion, the 2017 Trotanoy is a wine of exceptional quality and craftsmanship. Its velvety texture, intense flavors, and impressive structure make it a must-try for any wine lover. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for future enjoyment, this wine is sure to leave a lasting impression.
