Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, August 2021

(97+ points) The Marchesi Antinori 2018 Solaia reveals a silky and elegant personality, and the wine steps away from some of the more robust fruit weight and dark concentration that we've seen in the past. This elegant...

Solaia is a 50 acre (20 hectare), southwest-exposed vineyard of the Tignanello estate situated between 1150 and 1320 feet (350-400 meters) above sea level on stony soils consisting of calcareous clays and limestone rock. The Marchesi Antinori produced this wine for the first time in the 1978 vintage with a blend consisting of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc, repeating the initial production in 1979. In the following vintages, 20% Sangiovese became part of the blend and adjustments to the ratio of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc were made until the current composition of the blend was defined. Solaia is produced only in top vintages and was not produced in 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984, or 1992.

The 2018 Antinori Solaia IGT is a proprietary blend from the prestigious Antinori producer, originating from Tuscany, Italy. This red wine, with an alcohol content of 15%, has garnered significant attention and high praise from professional reviewers for its complexity and elegance.

Decanter rated the 2018 Solaia 98 points, describing it as a "sunkissed wine bursting with ripe raisins, blackcurrants and cherries." The review highlights the wine's enjoyable texture and subtle, mouthwatering acidity. Decanter further praises its depth and elegance, noting it as "juicy and plush but at the same time this has a quiet personality."

James Suckling, awarding the wine 97 points, commends its aromatic profile, mentioning "currants, fresh herbs, white pepper and cherry blossoms." Suckling emphasizes its "vertical, multilayered structure and ultra fine tannins," along with its "extremely long and focused" finish. He suggests that although the wine is open now, it will show even more excellence with an additional three to four years of aging.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate also awarded the wine 97 points (97+), recognizing its "silky and elegant personality." The review mentions the wine's "fruit purity and focus with black plum, cassis, blue flower, pencil shaving and lots of sweet spice from the oak." Notably, the 2018 vintage includes a higher percentage of Cabernet Franc, contributing to its complexity. The production is limited to 65,000 bottles.

Vinous, also with a 98-point score, describes the 2018 Solaia as "resonant and ample on the palate, with tons of vibrancy." Antonio Galloni notes its "inky dark fruit, chocolate, blackberry jam, licorice and spice," highlighting its dense yet elegantly structured nature.

Wine Spectator gave it 95 points, acknowledging its "vibrant black currant, violet, vanilla and toasty oak flavors." The review points out its balance and fine grip, suggesting it would benefit from two to three years of aging.

Jane Anson awarded the wine 98 points, appreciating its "cracked almond and bitter chocolate" notes along with "blackberry and raspberry puree." Anson describes it as "gourmet with butterscotch and coffee beans," praising its complexity and delicacy.

Finally, Wine Enthusiast rated the wine 94 points, noting its "muscle and restraint." The review highlights aromas of "camphor, cassis, espresso and star anise" and flavors of "raisin, steeped prune, licorice and mocha," complemented by velvety tannins.

In summary, the 2018 Antinori Solaia IGT is a highly acclaimed wine with a rich and complex profile, promising a long aging potential and a rewarding tasting experience.
