This is good, precise, inky and concentrated in colour with the texture the first thing you feel here, it actually takes a good few minutes before the fruit comes to the fore. The tannins are powerful, a little more brooding than some Pomerols this year but then the layers appear. The Cabernet Franc is hidden at first and you get the texture of the Merlot, then the florality of the Cabernet arrives, as does liquorice, silky plum and blackberry fruit. Give it time because this is a great Clos de Clocher, perhaps a little departure in terms of style but in the right direction – it’s starting to clearly put a stake in the ground alongside the really serious Pomerols - a property that is getting better and better. 3.8pH. Dark fruits, cocoa dusting, grilled sage and dried herbs, grippy tannins and plenty of waves of pomegranate and orange peel to add freshness, but a flash of heat also. Organic farming in the vineyard at this point, in a year that had early issues with rain and mildew pressure, but turned dry and hot for the summer. (91+ points) Another outstanding Pomerol in the vintage, the 2018 Clos Du Clocher is impressive. Revealing a deep purple color as well as notes of ripe plum, black cherries, scorched earth, graphite, and cedary herbs, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a straight, focused texture, good balance, and outstanding length. It says focused and inward on the palate, but I suspect 4-5 years in the cellar will help open it up as well as let some of the tannins resolve. It's unquestionably an outstanding wine and it should have two decades of overall longevity.
