For over three generations, the Sassetti family has been producing wine in Montalcino. The “Podere Pertimali”, with its 16 hectares of vineyards, is nestled on a slope in the Montosoli hill, north of Montalcino—one of the most favorable terroirs for Sangiovese in the area. Maintaining the family tradition, Livio Sassetti has renovated and extended the vineyards, retaining the genetic material of the original vines and preserving their characteristics.

Livio was among the founders of Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino in 1967. In 1968, he built a terracotta wall in his cellar, to keep the old vintages of the wines produced by his family. Today, this collection counts over 1000 bottles, among which stands out as the ‘grandmother’ of the current production - a bottle from the 1915 vintage!

In 1999, the Sassetti family purchased a property in the Tuscan Maremma, La Querciolina, within the DOC Montecucco. Thanks to their passion and experience, untended fields were nutured into into vineyards which produce Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo of great quality.

Today, both wineries are managed by Lorenzo Sassetti, Livio’s son, who is focused in continuing his family’s winemaking tradition.

Pertimali Brunello di Montalcino is 100% Sangiovese. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel and matured in barrel for 36 months, and again in bottle for another 6 months.

The 2018 Pertimali (Livio Sassetti) Brunello di Montalcino is an exceptional Sangiovese Grosso wine from Tuscany, Italy. This red wine, produced by Pertimali (Livio Sassetti), boasts an alcohol content of 14.5% and is sealed with a cork closure.

The wine has garnered numerous high scores from established reviewers. Vinous awarded it a 95, highlighting its "depths of dark, balsamic-tinged black cherry, plum sauce and autumnal spice" and describing it as "velvety to the core, nearly opulent in feel." Eric Guido from Vinous also noted that production was down by 20% due to a spring frost, resulting in an infusion of juice typically reserved for the Riserva into this vintage, making it one of the top wines of the year.

James Suckling gave it an even higher score of 96, citing "intense aromas of black cherries, lavender and spice, such as nutmeg," and recommending additional bottle age, suggesting to "try after 2026" for optimal enjoyment.

Kerin O'Keefe, who also rated it a 95, described the wine as having notes of "truffle, forest floor, leather and blue flower," and praised its "tangy and taut" palate with "tightly wound, fine-grained tannins and racy acidity." She suggests a drinking window from 2026 to 2033.

Jeb Dunnuck's publication rated the wine at 94+, emphasizing its "rich with compact and velvety layers" and aromas of "fig, black licorice, mocha, and roasted sage." Audrey Frick points out the wine's "full-bodied" nature and advises a couple of years of cellaring before consumption.

Wine Spectator gave it a 93, noting its "ripe and juicy" character with "plum, cherry, earth, tobacco, and menthol" flavors. The review highlights the wine's well-structured profile with "dense, dusty tannins and ample fruit," recommending it be enjoyed between 2025 and 2042.

Finally, Wine Enthusiast also scored it a 95, with Danielle Callegari describing the nose as "fruity and fizzy, like cherry cola" and the palate as "sweet and juicy with cherries" balanced by "an undertone of dark chocolate."

Overall, the 2018 Pertimali Brunello di Montalcino is a complex and highly praised wine, recommended for cellaring to achieve its full potential.
