Vinous, December 2020

jamessuckling.com, December 2022

Porcini mushrooms, cherry stones, iodine and some beetroot here. Savory and chewy, with a medium body and firm tannins. A little tight and austere at the finish. Should soften. Try in 2023.

The name Sesta, of Roman origin, derives from the sixth (sesta in Italian) milestone where the Parish Church of Saint Mary of Sexta once stood along the ancient road from Roselle to Chiusi.

The Sesta Estate was formed after the expansion of the Republic of Siena. In 1850, Felice and Giovanni Ciacci became owners of the property and in 1966, the first bottles of Brunello from the Tenuta di Sesta estate were produced by Giuseppe Ciacci, father of current owner Giovanni Ciacci. At the time, there were only twelve bottlers of Brunello. For this reason, the Tenuta di Sesta estate is recognized as one of the historical Montalcino estates.

The property extends over 200 hectares, of which 30 hectares are under vine for the production of Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino, and Sant’Antimo wines. The remaining area is mostly covered by olive groves and grain. Since 1995, the winery has been managed by Giovanni Ciacci, who has been joined by his children Andrea and Francesca in the areas of business and agronomic management.

Tenuta di Sesta Brunello di Montalcino is pure Sangiovese Grosso from a selection of the best grapes from the estate’s vineyards. The wine is matured in 30 hl Slavonian oak barrels for 30 months, with subsequent aging in bottle for about 4 months. When it is young, it is rich in scents of fruit and flowers. When it has aged, it acquires complex ethereal characteristics and offers a broad bouquet with an aroma of autumn leaves.
