Shows a very strident, oak-driven nose with cedar and spice that’s overlaid on ripe blackcurrant, red plum and cherry. Pepper and cocoa powder, too. The palate has a sinewy feel with intense summer berries and plums, as...

Rich, succulent flavors of wild berry are ripe and plush, but there's terrific restraint here as well, with cedary tannins and an element of palo santo, along with tobacco, dried herb and green tea notes that are firm on...

Penfolds is an iconic Australian wine producer established in 1844 when Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold and his family arrived from England and paid the princely sum of £1,200 for 500 acres of the best land in Magill. He planted French vine cuttings with the intention of producing his own “medicinal tonic” wine.

When he passed away, his wife Mary assumed responsibility for the 60 acres of vines in The Grange Vineyard, which was then producing several varieties. She managed the estate for 25 years, passing it on to her daughter Georgina and son-in-law Thomas Hyland when she retired. The Penfold family continued to operate the business very successfully and retained a controlling interest after the company became public.

Penfolds now has an extensive portfolio that includes the ‘House Style’ collection, numbered-bin releases, special bins, and fortifieds among others. It has played a pivotal role in the evolution of winemaking in Australia and across the world.

Penfolds has earned numerous accolades for its flagship and most iconic wine, Grange, the creation of former Chief Winemaker Max Schubert who aimed to match the finest, aged Bordeaux wines. Initially rejected by Penfolds management, the experiment was kept secret and barrels of wines were hidden behind a fake wall in the tunnels at Magill Estate. With bottle age development, a second tasting was greeted with enthusiasm and production was restarted.

Penfolds vineyards are located primarily in South Australia on prime land throughout the state’s most esteemed viticultural regions. Throughout its history, Penfolds has owned and leased vineyards in addition to sourcing grapes from independent growers. Its grapes are sourced from more than 220 vineyards and grape growers across Australia. This strategy reflects the tradition of multi-vineyard and multi-regional sourcing, first introduced in the 1860s by Mary Penfold, and allows for a consistency of style and quality across vintages, something Penfolds is renowned for.

Introducing the 2019 Penfolds Bin 389, an exceptional proprietary blend that hails from the prestigious wine region of South Australia. This stellar creation from the esteemed Penfolds winery is a harmonious blend of 53% cabernet sauvignon and 47% shiraz, a distinctly Australian blend that exemplifies the winemaker's craftsmanship.

The wine has a compelling visual appeal, with its deep, saturated ruby hues that hint at the intensity within. The nose is expressive and layered, presenting an oak-driven profile with notes of cedar, spice, ripe blackcurrant, red plum and cherry, further accented by pepper and cocoa powder. This complex bouquet is indicative of the wine's robust character, reinforced by its 14.5 percent alcohol content.

On the palate, this red wine is both sumptuous and structured, offering an intense burst of summer berries and plums, coupled with a strong blackcurrant character. The wine's sinewy feel is balanced by the bold presence of tannins, resulting in a remarkably balanced mouthfeel. The wine's robust character is further enhanced by its maturation in American-oak hogsheads, which lends a delightful smokiness to the finish.

The 2019 Penfolds Bin 389 is a wine with a resolute conviction, showcasing a seamless harmony between the tension and fine-boned structure of cabernet and the body and depth of shiraz. It finishes expansively and far-reaching, thanks to a sea of glorious Penfolds tannins. This wine is curated for a brazen style, making it an excellent choice for those who appreciate strong, assertive wines.

This wine is sealed with a traditional cork closure, preserving its integrity and complexity. With an impressive score of 94 from renowned wine reviewer James Suckling and a score of 96 from Halliday Wine Companion, the 2019 Penfolds Bin 389 is a wine that promises an unforgettable tasting experience. It is recommended to drink over the next decade to fully appreciate its evolving nuances and maturity.
