Galatrona is Petrolo's flagship and one of the most awarded wines of the estate. It is a wine of great structure on the palate, and wildly aromatic on the nose. First produced in 1994, this 100% Merlot comes from estate vines planted in the early 90’s. The vineyard extends over 3 hectares, and is the first vineyard of Merlot that Petrolo planted. The yield per vine is limited, allowing for the concentration of components fundamental to achieve the structure, elegance, balance and persistence wanted for this wine.

Macerated on the skins for 2 weeks or more, the pump-overs are done often and with considerable care to allow for complete and gentle extraction. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barriques, and the wine is then aged in new French barriques for approximately 18 months. During this period the wine is left for the first 6 months on the fine lees, which allows the finished product to achieve greater complexity.

The 2019 Petrolo Galatrona IGT is a 100% Merlot from the Tuscany region of Italy. Produced by Petrolo, this wine is celebrated for its elegance and complexity, reflected in the excellent reviews it has received from various wine experts.

James Suckling awarded the wine an impressive 99 points, applauding its intense fruit and vibrancy. He described it as having “blackberries and black cherries with lavender and violets on the nose,” and noted its "velvety, chewy tannins." Suckling emphasized the wine's unique character, calling it "muscular, yet agile" and "pure and poised," recommending it be consumed after 2025.

Decanter also praised the 2019 Petrolo Galatrona, giving it a score of 95 points. This review highlighted its aromatic profile, noting a "wonderful floral touch" and "wild strawberries." The wine was described as "satin-like at first," with textures of cherry, raspberry, and blackberry, finishing with a "herbal lift." The review concluded that the wine has "excellent drive" and promises a long life ahead.

Wine Spectator gave the wine a 96-point rating, focusing on its concentrated nature and balance between fruit and tannins. The review mentioned "an earthy, savory side" contrasting with "plum and blackberry fruit," and noted a "beam of acidity" that keeps the wine "focused and refined." The ideal drinking window for this wine is suggested to be from 2025 through 2043.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate provided a score of 97 points, praising the wine's "soft and luscious" nature made with organic Merlot grapes. The review highlighted dark fruit flavors such as "black cherry and sweet prune," with layers of "spice, leather, and perfumed tobacco." It described the wine as having a "tight, compact, yet fundamentally rich quality."

Vinous also rated the wine 96 points, calling it "a gorgeous wine" with "striking depth" and "freshness and delineation." Reviewer Antonio Galloni noted the presence of "blue/purple fruit, mocha, incense, espresso, and lavender," and remarked that this vintage is among the best he can recall.

Jane Anson gave the wine a 94-point score, noting the influence of its clay soils and altitude. Her review mentioned "heavy smoke on the opening" and "violet edging," with ripe Merlot fruits and "luscious raspberry and blackberry coulis." The wine was described as having a "rough grain to the tannins" and a finish with "freshly cut rosemary."

Overall, the 2019 Petrolo Galatrona IGT is a highly regarded Merlot offering a blend of intense fruit, elegant tannins, and balanced acidity, promising a rewarding experience for those who choose to enjoy it in the coming decades.
