jamessuckling.com, August 2023

Subtle and beautiful on the nose with currants, flowers and light sage aromas that follow through to a full body with ultra-fine tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Extremely polished and poised. Classy. Best after 2028.

janeanson.com, July 2023

A great vintage of the iconic Solaia, full of cloves, sage, graphite, grilled dried herbs, underbrush and roasted cherry pit. There's fruit too, bilberry and cassis, juicy and mouthwatering, both understated and...

Decanter, August 2023

Baked black fruit, ripe, fragrant and intense on the nose. Bright and sour fruit on the palate, quite a sharp initial tang from the high acidity before rich, sunny, ripe strawberries and raspberries come into play with...

The Wine Independent, August 2023

The 2020 Solaia is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, and Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it needs a little coaxing to bring out notes of warm cassis, black cherry compote, and black raspberries...

Vinous, June 2023

The 2020 Solaia is an infant. I expected a more exuberant wine, but the 2020 is built along more classic lines. Black cherry, plum, gravel, incense, smoke, pencil shavings and spice all open effortlessly. As always...

Wine Enthusiast, September 2024

A torrent of blackberries, blueberries, currants jump off the nose before giving way to soil and wild fennel. On the palate berries remain as exuberant as they were on the nose, equally balanced by wild herbs and pepper...

Solaia is a 50 acre (20 hectare), southwest-exposed vineyard of the Tignanello estate situated between 1150 and 1320 feet (350-400 meters) above sea level on stony soils consisting of calcareous clays and limestone rock. The Marchesi Antinori produced this wine for the first time in the 1978 vintage with a blend consisting of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc, repeating the initial production in 1979. In the following vintages, 20% Sangiovese became part of the blend and adjustments to the ratio of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc were made until the current composition of the blend was defined. Solaia is produced only in top vintages and was not produced in 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984, or 1992.

The 2020 Antinori Solaia IGT is a proprietary red blend from Tuscany, Italy, produced by the renowned Antinori family. This vintage is composed predominantly of Cabernet Sauvignon, supplemented by smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese, and it boasts an alcohol content of 14.5%. The wine is sealed with a cork closure.

This vintage has garnered high praise from several prominent reviewers. James Suckling awarded it an impressive 98 points, describing it as "subtle and beautiful on the nose with currants, flowers, and light sage aromas that follow through to a full body with ultra-fine tannins and a long and flavorful finish." Suckling lauded it for being "extremely polished and poised" and advised that it is best enjoyed after 2028.

Decanter also rated the 2020 Solaia highly with 97 points. They noted its "baked black fruit, ripe, fragrant and intense on the nose," and highlighted its "bright and sour fruit on the palate" with a "sharp initial tang from the high acidity." The wine was described as "powerful" and "bordering on too hedonistic at times," yet balanced by "layers of juicy freshness." Decanter emphasized its confident and charismatic nature, which will delight fans of this style.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave the wine 96 points, commenting on its "inky dark appearance" and "exuberant richness and thick layers of blackberry and plum." The publication appreciated the sweet, expertly crafted tannins, and noted that the 2020 vintage is "quite bold" with significant texture and mouthfeel. They also observed flavors of spice, toasted coffee bean, and dark fruit.

Vinous matched Decanter's score with 97 points, describing the wine as an "infant" built along more classic lines. They noted elements of "black cherry, plum, gravel, incense, smoke, pencil shavings, and spice," emphasizing its distinctly Italian character with plenty of Tuscan acidity and structure.

Jane Anson, awarding 98 points, praised the "great vintage" of the Solaia, highlighting its complexity with notes of "cloves, sage, graphite, grilled dried herbs, underbrush, and roasted cherry pit." Anson pointed out the wine's "grip and length" and its "effortless charm," reflecting an excellent vintage with low yields after a hot, dry summer.

Wine Spectator also gave it 97 points, describing the wine as "dripping with black currant, blackberry, black cherry, iron, and toasty oak flavors." They noted its "civilized tannins" that provide structure and suggested it is best from 2026 through 2045.

Finally, The Wine Independent awarded 97 points, describing the wine's deep garnet-purple color and its rich, bold black fruits supported by ripe, grainy tannins, and "jaw-dropping tension," finishing long and lifted.

Overall, the 2020 Antinori Solaia IGT is a well-regarded wine, noted for its rich fruit flavors, impressive structure, and balanced opulence, making it a highly sought-after vintage from Tuscany.
